Race Report: Paris SX

A race recap from day one in Paris.

Published

on

The first day of the spectacle that is the Paris supercross featured everything that a fan could possibly want. There was close racing, surprises and aggressive racing. A lot happened! All of the different races are broken down and laid out in the MX Vice race report below. The facts are listed, but if you want to know something more specific then just get in touch via social media.

SX1 Superpole

Following the opening ceremonies, which featured all of the stereotypes of the Paris race, proceedings got underway with the Superpole. The Superpole features the top-ten riders from the daytime qualifying session, then they all had one shot at a clear track to throw the quickest lap down. Simple! Justin Hill took the best time in that session right at the very end, even though his lap looked fairly mellow. The greatest surprise was that Jason Anderson could only muster up the eighth-fastest time, despite the fact that he did not even make any mistakes. Even Gregory Aranda went faster than him!

SX2 Heat One

The first SX2 heat race, or sprint as it is named in the programme, counts towards the overall classification, but is also an extremely short affair. It actually seemed as though Brian Strubhart-Moreau was destined to win this one, as he darted into the early lead and stayed strong at the head of the pack for four of the six laps. Jace Owen eventually slipped through with just two laps to go though, so stole the victory with Adrien Escoffier in tow. Escoffier was impressive from the very beginning of the day. Another point of interest is that Valentin Guillod withdrew from the race after a crash. It is thought that he hit his head in the fall, but he returned for the second main event.

SX1 Heat One

What occurred in the various practice sessions and whatnot led some to believe that Jason Anderson would not be able to contend for the victory. Those theories were destroyed as soon as the gates dropped on the first SX1 heat race though, as he moved past Vince Friese early on and then controlled proceedings until he hit the chequered flag. Weston Peick also moved around Friese, after starting third, to take second. Dylan Ferrandis was arguably the most impressive, as he moved up from sixth to third. Justin Hill (fifth), Zach Osborne (sixth) and Justin Brayton (ninth) were all hindered by poor starts.

SX2 Heat Two

Cameron McAdoo was arguably the fastest rider in the SX2 class this evening, but poor starts stopped him from showing that in two of the three main events. The second encounter was where he really shined. McAdoo did not quite claim the holeshot aboard his CRF250R, but he did move into the lead by the end of the first complete lap. McAdoo controlled the race, despite the fact that Jace Owen kept things close, then took the win by a little over two seconds. Adrien Escoffier could only manage a fourth in this one, as Thomas Do got ahead of him on lap two, but that was still enough to keep him in the hunt for the overall.

SX1 Heat Two

The second SX1 heat was undoubtedly the best race of the night. The lap chart does not paint the greatest picture, as it shows that Dylan Ferrandis led from the drop of the gate all the way to the chequered flag, but the fight for the victory was so close that the fans were on their feet the entire time. Ferrandis, Zach Osborne and Jason Anderson were separated by no more than two seconds the entire time. The trio ended up finishing in that order, which meant that Ferrandis and Anderson were tied for the overall win following two races.

Zach Osborne and Weston Peick, fourth in the second race, were still very much in the hunt too. Justin Brayton was marred by yet another poor start in this one and Justin Hill rode around at the back, after a crash on lap one left him in dead last. The tight nature of the Paris circuit prompted mistakes and caused a handful of elite riders, like those two, to struggle after a difficult start. It is not easy to move forward! There were some different line choices out on track though. All of the elite riders were tripling through the rhythm section before the penultimate turn, for instance, whereas Osborne opted to go double, triple and then single. Having options like that is not always the case at these European events.

SX2 Main Event

The SX2 main event or final, as it is officially named, was similar to the previous SX1 heat. Jace Owen, Adrien Escoffier and Cameron McAdoo were involved in a tense three-way tussle that did not include a single pass. It was still an extremely exciting affair, however, thanks to the latter. McAdoo was arguably the quickest guy once again, but just could not find a way to get into second in order to make a run at Owen. The fact that McAdoo bobbled in the whoops and lost three or four seconds, then regained that ground within just two laps, should give you an idea of the speed that he possessed. It was only enough for third in the main event and third on the night though, as Owen claimed his second race win and the overall victory.

Jace Owen and Cameron McAdoo were racing in Australia just one week ago, so it is remarkable that they can hop onto foreign machinery and immediately perform. It is worth noting that Owen, the eventual winner, claimed that he had big extremely sick this week, after the endless travelling. Perhaps that means that he could be even stronger on the second and final night of racing? A final point to consider is that Valentin Guillod crashed again and sustained a concussion. Although he was down for quite a while, he eventually got up and walked away under his own power.

SX1 Main Event

The first night of racing wrapped up with an SX1 main event that was, truthfully, not very exciting. The mood was sombre anyway, after Weston Peick fell in turn one and was taken away on a stretcher. Information on his condition will be shared in due course. Zach Osborne took the holeshot in the main event and was followed by Dylan Ferrandis and Jason Anderson, so it seemed as though the stage was set for another exciting run to the chequered flag. Ferrandis washed out early on and then picked his steed back up in twelfth, so eyes were fixed on the Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing riders from that point on.

Anderson wore his teammate down on lap five and then led for the remaining sixteen laps. Osborne did not get close enough to show Anderson a wheel after that pass but did ensure that the deficit never went higher than two seconds. It was close, just not close enough. The victory that Anderson eventually claimed was also enough to give him the overall on night one. Ferrandis actually recovered to take fourth, following that small crash at the beginning of the race, so he slotted into second overall. Zach Osborne was third.
