Race Report: Emmen

Four champions were crowned!

Published

on

For many riders Emmen (Drenthe) is not exactly a favourite destination. However, the local ‘motodrome’ was the host for round four of the Dutch Masters of Motocross. The penultimate race of the series also saw the crowning of Jeffrey Herlings and Evgeny Bobryshev as 2016 Dutch champions.

Situated in the northeast of the country, Emmen is a long way from the heartland of Dutch motocross. Obviously it can only be a good thing to spread the love and have the most important domestic races in many different regions. Unfortunately Emmen didn’t exactly offer the track and surroundings befitting of one of the strongest national race series in Europe. A compact, uninspired track was combined with poor visibility for spectators and a low crowd turnout. Racing is racing though and wins were up for grabs in four classes!

Even with bad starts Herlings encountered little resistance on his way to his first Dutch title since 2013. Rockstar Energy Husqvarna’s Max Anstie led the opening moto for six laps, but in the rough sandy conditions no one can stop Jeffrey! The Bullet passed Anstie to capture the first race with an impressive fifty-five-second lead over Davy Pootjes. Anstie finished third, but managed to save second overall by finishing runner-up to Herlings in the second moto. Pootjes was third, which allowed him to grab third overall ahead of Brian Bogers (5-4). KTM’s EMX250 star Jorge Prado was quietly satisfied with his fifth place (5-7).

Herlings ticked his first box of the season off. “That’s the first one; next up I have to seal the world title,” he said post-race. With a sixty-point lead, Anstie can only gun for his first moto win at the final round in Halle next weekend.  Rockstar Energy Husqvarna’s Conrad Mewse hit the deck hard in time practice but luckily he didn’t suffer any significant injuries, just some bruises.

We’re not sure about Evgeny Bobryshev’s command of the Dutch language, but it’s fair to call Holland his second home. With Glenn Coldenhoff out for the opening round in Axel it was only a matter of time for Bobby to claim another Dutch crown. Fair play to Coldenhoff though, he didn’t hand the HRC rider the title without a hard battle. Bobryshev rode his CRF450R to victory in the first sprint, but the fact that he won by half a second illustrated how hard Glenn pushed the experienced Russian.

The Red Bull KTM rider had already posted the fastest lap in time practice and he was definitely on fire in race two. Coldenhoff had the best start and it was Bobryshev who applied some serious pressure, but ‘The Hoff’ won it! Even while Evgeny took the title, Coldenhoff celebrated the overall. Surprisingly strong in his home race was Ceriel Klein Kromhof. Ceriel will be the first to admit that he never quit succeeded to put things together in international races, yet on home turf CKK admirably hung in there with Coldenhoff and Bobryshev for a while. He finished third twice.

Equally interesting was the somewhat prestigious Belgian battle between Jens Getteman and Kevin Wouts. Both KTM-mounted riders had bad starts and each recorded a fourth and fifth place. Getteman’s better second moto handed him fourth overall. Wouts is still third in the standings, however. After his strong rides in EMX250 Kevin will be keen to claim the overall podium in the Dutch Masters of Motocross as well, but his one-point advantage over the consistent Rick Satink and fourteen points over Klein Kromhof could make for an interesting fight next weekend!

EMX125 leader Jago Geerts (Sakhar KTM) underlined his supremacy in the two-stroke class. The young lad from Balen, Belgium, added another double-moto win to his tally. He also claimed the championship with one event to go. Mikkel Haarup, competing aboard Ice One Husqvarna machinery, finished second (3-2). Dutchman Rick Elzinga, the reigning Dutch 85cc champ, mounted the lowest podium step with 4-6 finishes. Brits Taylor Hammal and Christopher Mills finished fourth and fifth respectively. Husqvarna Pol Motors rider Marcel Conijn came home second in moto one, but crashed hard in the second moto.

‘The day of champions’ was completed in 85cc too. Sweden’s Emil Jonrup won twice ahead of Kay De wolf (3-2). Last but not least Adam ‘Coggings’ Collings recorded his first Dutch podium. Well done Adam and congrats to all champions!
