Pre-Race: MXGP of Germany

Pre-race musings.

Published

on

Teutschenthal, the circuit that will host the Grand Prix of Germany this weekend, is a stop on the FIM Motocross World Championship calendar that everyone is familiar with. That does not mean that it has not come under fire in the past though, as complaints were made about the track conditions just two years ago.

The event has been scrutinised since then and, thankfully, measures have been taken to ensure that everything is in order. The promoters may face a different challenge this weekend, as poor weather has threatened to derail proceedings. Thunderstorms and torrential rain are battering the circuit currently and further showers are also expected overnight. The good news is that blue skies will eventually prevail, but will it be too late?

For a bit of perspective, the paddock is already flooded and the rain is not letting up. A revised schedule from Youthstream should land rather soon, one would think, as conditions will only deteriorate further as the night progresses. The latest forecast states that the rain will clear at 03:00am.

The worst-case scenario is that the storms stick around all weekend and we are left with a mudder, which would be yet another intriguing chapter in this extremely interesting edition of the FIM Motocross World Championship. There are multiple things to consider this weekend, barring the weather, as various riders are dealing with injuries and others have switched teams completely.

We’ll start with the former, as that involves the biggest name in the premier class. Tim Gajser, of the Honda HRC team, will race this weekend, but is still extremely sore from that vicious fall at Kegums. His preparation has been far from ideal, so it remains to be seen just how strong he’ll be on Sunday. The good news is that the deficit that he faces in the series standings is not too large, so he is not in a must-win situation, and conditions should suit his style.

Now, what about the mid-season transfers? Morgan Lesiardo, a replacement for Adam Sterry on the Monster Energy KRT MX2 team, will make his debut at Teutschenthal. The Italian currently leads the EMX250 series, so how he fares will be a great indication of the current level in that division. His new teammate, Stephen Rubini, will also return to the MX2 class this weekend. Both riders will return to the support class at the Grand Prix of France next weekend.

Finally, there is Lars Van Berkel. Van Berkel, who has scored just eight points this season, is no stranger to switching machinery and teams, as this will be the third outfit that he has represented in eight rounds! The Dutchman has only competed in five of the rounds (including this weekend’s fixture) also.

Anyway, there you have it. There is plenty to mull over ahead of the German Grand Prix, which will undoubtedly keep fans on the edge of their seats. Remember that the EMX150 and EMX300 riders will be taking part for the first time this year also and, by the way, you can find out more about those classes elsewhere on this site.

Once again, our resident stats guru, Paul Pearcy, provides a breakdown of the MX2 class going into Intu Xanadu. Famed more for its access to a shopping mall and McDonald’s than actual passing, the MX2 contenders will be looking to make their mark. Last year, Simon Laengenfelder reigned supreme and was unstoppable on Sunday, with no rider able to match his pace. If you were a betting man, who would be your winner?
