Motocross is a family affair in the Meara household.
Still teenagers, both John and Jason are Ulster Champions with ambitions of making it in the British championship this season, while younger brother Cailum has the chance of a lifetime in the EMX150 Honda series in 2014.
It looks like being an exciting year for young Loughbrickland motocrosser Cailum Meara. The 13 year old has been selected for the prestigious Honda 150 European Championship, where the prize for the winner is a fully sponsored ride with a Grand Prix Honda Team in the European MX2 Championship for 2015.
The series runs alongside five Grands Prix with round one at Valkenswaard in Holand on 5th May, followed by rounds at Matterley Basin in England on 25th May, Teustchental Germany on 22nd June, Uddevalla Sweden on 6th July, and Loket Czech Republic on 27th July.
Riders are selected for this series on their racing career so far, and for their future potential, all races are run at Grand Prix weekends and are the ideal stepping stone to a Grand Prix Career, for Cailum to get selected is an achievement in itself.
All Cailum has to do is turn up with a mechanic an Honda will have his 150cc four stroke machine ready to go.
Racing against the best 11 to 14 year olds in Europe on identical machines is a fantastic opportunity for the motocross mad youngster, particularly after two seasons with serious leg injuries, Cailum’s enthusiasm has not diminished for the sport despite these setbacks, and the support, technical knowledge and coaching supplied by Honda will only help his career.
First up for Cailum is the official Honda Training Camp at Albaida Spain on 22nd/23rd March where riders and mechanics will gain familiarity with the machines and format, and meet their competitors from all over Europe, supervised by Grand Prix winner Gordon Crockard.
Meanwhile, along with Cailum in Europe, John and Jason racing the British and Ulster championships, younger brother Jack starts his racing career when he turns 6 later this year! That’s four brothers in various racing locations throughout the season!
This will be an especially expensive year for Cailum, and any help in terms of sponsorship or assistance in travelling would be appreciated by the enthusiastic rider, please contact Cailum’s Mum, Breda if you are interested in assisting this future star on 0792 7906594.
