Dutch Masters titles awarded in Markelo

The last race of the Dutch Masters of Motocross was held in Markelo amid good public interest. Due to the rainfall on the days prior to the event, the track was heavier than normal, but the club did everything they could to have the track in the best possible condition.

Jeffrey Herlings started in the 500 class with painful ribs. A crash at the start of the first moto made it even more exciting, but Herlings came back strong and managed to limit the damage with a third place. In the second heat he managed to open a gap in the beginning of the race and took control of the race. With these results he finished second in the overall standings, which was enough to extend his title in the 500 class. Romain Febvre managed to win the race in Markelo with a 1-2 in the heats. Febvre is a good sand rider and showed this again in Markelo. Febvre was second in the races in Harfsen and Oldebroek and with the win in Markelo he finished in second place in the final standings. Calvin Vlaanderen rode two solid motos and finished third both times.

It was exciting in the 250 class because Rick Elzinga and Cas Valk fought for the title. In the first heat they both fought fiercely, but Elzinga managed to win the heat ahead of Valk, reducing his deficit to 1 point. In the second moto Elzinga was in front again after the start and a crash by Valk left him with a gap. Elzinga continued to ride in a controlled manner and a second place in the second moto was enough to win his second title in the 250 class. Elzinga won the daily classification in Markelo ahead of Thibault Benistant 3-1 and Cas Valk 2-3.

Gyan Doensen managed to win the title in the 125 class in a very strong manner. Doensen dominated both motos and won both the first and second motos. This secured him the title. Behind Doensen, the two rookies of the 125 class, Jarne Bervoets and Dani Heitink, managed to finish second and third in the daily rankings, which was also the final standings in the championship.

In the 85cc class, Timo Heuver started the race with a safe lead, but something can always happen. Heuver kept a cool head and rode to two solid heat victories in Markelo. This earned him the title and he can look back on the season with satisfaction. With a 2-4 in the heats, Jekabs Hudolejs finished second in the overall standings ahead of Itay Weinberg 5-2. Hudolejs also finished second in the championship ahead of Belgian Torre van Mechgelen.
