Catch Up: Dominic Lancett

Dominic Lancett is a 14-year-old rider from Hereford, UK. ‘Dom’ is currently riding a Husqvarna BW 85. He’s been riding dirt bikes since he was seven years old and his first bike was a Husqvarna 50. He is still at school so it’s obviously hard for him to ride in the week! We caught up with him to see how this year has been going for him…

MX Vice: How has this year gone?

Dom Lancett: This year started off rough in the sand rounds of the British Youth Nationals. But as the year went by I gained both speed and confidence. As the hard pack rounds closed in I was feeling happy and looking forward to the 2nd half of the year. Round 4 at Milton Malsor I battled hard all weekend, winning a close battle in the last race getting me the overall. Then came Pontrilas my home track but the Saturday was rained off. So, unfortunately I couldn’t have the whole five races but again I was battling hard for the 3 races. I came away with back to back overall victories. The last round at Cusses Gorse, I came into with confidence but both race bikes failed in free practice and had me on my standard bike. In qualifying I went out and managed 2nd. In race one I had a good start battled to 1st and gapped 8 seconds on the rest of the pack. In race two I had a crash on the first turn putting me dead last but I got back up and fought back to 6th. Then on the Sunday race one I had a good start got up to 3rd then slipping off the bike. Breaking both my collar bone and my Humerus. I missed out on the last 2 races still ending up 3rd in the overall championship.

How do you find the bike that you’re on?

The bike that I’m on has been fast, smooth and reliable all year! I love the bike I’m on and can’t wait to be back after my injury.

What series’ are you doing?

This year I did the British Youth Nationals championship finishing 3rd and the Pirrelli British Masters finishing 1st.

Have you set your goals for this/next year?

Next year I want to win the British Youth Nationals and the other championships I do.

Do you feel like you’ve made a lot of progression this year?

I do feel like I’ve made lots of progress this year, as the start of the year I couldn’t finish on the podium then at the end I won two overall weekends.

Do you ride much during the week?

On the off season I will ride every Saturday and Sunday and the odd Wednesday.

What’s been the best track for you this year and why?

My favourite track this year has definitely been a track called Almenar in Spain! I went there for a week with my trainer Justin Morris and the track was really nice with deep ruts and huge jumps!

Is there anyone you would like to thank for the help throughout the last 12 months?

This year I’ve had so much help of my amazing team KJS racing it’s been such a good team throughout this season and hopefully again next season! I can’t thank the manager Kev Smith enough and Richard De Beer for tuning my bike. Also i’d like to thank my mechanic Dian Traylor for taking me out on days riding and getting my bike ready on the race day. Also behind the scenes Paul Chambers from Dualsport Motorcycles Ledbury for doing the bike in between weekends, TWS for the support and Justin Morris for the training! Most of all my Mum and Dad.
