With the 2013 MAXXIS British Motocross Championship reaching just over half way, Desertmartin plays host to the 6th round of the Championship on Sunday, 23rd June 2013.
The Cookstown Club are working hard to prepare the World famous circuit for the arrival of the only British Motorcycling Event on the island of Ireland this year, so let’s have a look at the Championship Standings at the moment.
In the MX1 Class for 450cc machines, Kristian Whatley on his MBO Yamaha, son of 1980’s factory rider Jeremy holds a 14 point lead over Spaniard Jonathan Barragan on his ICE1 KTM, the team owned by F1 driver Kimi Raikkonen, third is French rider Nicolas Aubin on the Dave Thorpe run Buildbase Honda a further 13 points adrift, next up is Estonian fan favourite, Tanel Leok on the MVRD Honda, but he may not make Desertmartin due to recent injuries, and returning British Champion Brad Anderson is in fifth on the LPE MAXXIS Kawasaki, struggling a bit on his return from a year in Australia.
Also in the talent rich MX1 class are riders such as Mattis Karro the Latvian flyer on the STR KTM, Gert Krestinov, and Jamie Law, local interest here is with Championship regulars Combers Wayne Garrett on the Jonathan Rea owned JAR by IFS Honda, Ballygowan man Gary Gibson on the Bannside Pallets and Haulage Suzuki, and Dubliner Michael Mahon on the VMX KTM.
Unfortunately missing due to a broken wrist sustained at the last round at Foxhills, popular Dubliner Stuart Edmonds will not be able to pilot the CCR TM.
In the MX2 Class, defending Champion Elliot Banks Browne riding for the locally owned HM Plant KTM team leads the Championship by 43 points from Frenchman Steven Lenoir on his Evotech KTM, third is ever smiling South African, and recent father Neville Bradshaw on the super fast Putoline Honda, but hot on his tail is local hero, Graeme Irwin on his Heads and All Threads Suzuki with Bryan McKenzie rounding out the top six on his Kawasaki.
This class is also stacked with talent, with riders such as Ben & Nathan Watson on the HM Plant KTM’s, Lewis Tombs on the JAR by IFS Honda, and of course, local hope Martin Barr on the VMX KTM.
Martin is just coming back from a nasty thumb injury, and he will be hoping for a great result at his favourite track, and 16 year old Jason Meara will also be hoping to broaden his experience when he takes on the big boys at home on the AMR Honda.
Also running on the day will be the MXY2 class for Under 18 year old riders; this class is currently led by Robert Davidson by 9 points from Brad Todd and Ben Putnam who are tied for second.
Local focus will be on Glenoe youngster Glenn McCormick who scored his first podium at the last round at Milton Park, he will be hoping to reach the ‘top box’ on his Agnew Recovery Watt KTM, Larne rider Connor Campbell & Templepatrick man Jordan McClelland will be hoping to score at their local circuit too.
With the local ‘Wild Card’ riders to be announced next week, excitement is building for the highlight of the motocross year, with a full day of racing it will be an unmissable day out for all the family.
More details will follow in the coming weeks.
