Updates: MXGP of Lombardia

Seventeen Ottobiano updates.

Published

on

The Grand Prix of France was run just five days ago, but there has been an influx of injuries and disappointing news since then. Five more riders have moved onto the sidelines, including a series leader, but at least three guys will attempt to return. All of that information is in this regular MX Vice feature.

In for the Grand Prix of Lombardia

Todd Waters: Todd Waters was ecstatic that he had an opportunity to be a fill-in rider on Team HRC. The time that he got to spend on the factory bike was limited, however, as he crashed in his first race and fractured his collarbone. One month on now, Waters is ready to return and has been back on the bike for a little over a week. It sounds like he does not feel any pain or discomfort.

Adam Sterry: Adam Sterry missed rounds seven and eight with an ankle injury, then returned at the ninth round and had issues with the heat. Those problems ruled him out of round ten, because he was instructed that it would not be safe for him to compete, but he will return to racing this weekend! This will mark his first race with Marc de Reuver.

Anthony Rodriguez: Anthony Rodriguez damaged a ligament in his ankle at the previous round of the FIM Motocross World Championship and elected to watch from the sidelines. It is thought that Rodriguez, who is a fill-in rider beneath the Kemea Yamaha awning, is going to attempt to ride this weekend though. This is one of the few tracks that he has ridden before.

Out of the Grand Prix of Lombardia

Jeffrey Herlings: Heartbreak! Jeffrey Herlings crashed on Wednesday and broke his right collarbone. Surgery was performed that night to fix the problem, but he will not be on the starting line at the Grand Prix of Lombardia. Herlings expects to get back on the bike in around a week and should be ready to race at the Grand Prix of Indonesia, where he will still have a red plate attached to his steed.

Julien Lieber:  The Grand Prix of Great Britain was a tricky one for Julien Lieber, as he had a handful of big crashes and left battered and bruised. Lieber thought that he was fine though, hence why he decided to race at the Grand Prix of France, but it was later revealed that he had fractured his scapula. Lieber expects to return to racing at the Grand Prix of Indonesia.

Arminas Jasikonis: Arminas Jasikonis had a hard hit at the Grand Prix of France and, thankfully, did not sustain any broken bones. Shoulder and hip issues stopped him from racing there though and will do the same this weekend. Jasikonis confirmed on social media that he has no movement in his shoulder and pain in his hip, but will attempt to recover as quick as he can.

Petar Petrov: Petar Petrov actually broke his finger at the Grand Prix of Great Britain, but was determined to push through the issue and continue to improve in his maiden MXGP season. The pain proved to be too much, however, so he will have a small surgery to fix it. There is currently no timeline on his recovery, but it seems unlikely that he will make it to Indonesia.

David Herbreteau: David Herbreteau did not envision his home Grand Prix ending with a dislocated shoulder, but that is exactly what happened. This marked the third time that he has dislocated his shoulder so, unfortunately, he needs to have surgery as soon as possible. It seems as though that is going to mark the end of his season.

Darian Sanayei: Darian Sanayei was always going to bow out of the current campaign early, in order to have his ACL repaired, but did not expect to be on the sidelines at this point. The knee did not hold up well in the races at the Grand Prix of Great Britain, so he made the decision to turn his attention to next year. Sanayei spoke about the injury in detail in an exclusive MX Vice podcast.

Jed Beaton: Jed Beaton was edging towards a maiden win in the FIM Motocross World Championship, but had a horrific crash at the Grand Prix of Great Britain and is now expected to miss the rest of the current term. Beaton sustained a broken leg and broken ankle in the fall, so the F&H Racing Kawasaki squad are down to just two riders.

Alvin Ostlund: Alvin Ostlund was one of the many riders who got caught out by the waves at the Grand Prix of Latvia. The crash that he experienced was rather serious and, unfortunately, a broken ankle was sustained. Although it has not been confirmed how long it will take for him to recover, he will certainly not be on track anytime soon.

Jordi Tixier: Jordi Tixier initially wanted to return at the Grand Prix of Trentino, but then scrapped that idea after he struggled at an international race. Tixier had an additional break following that, in order to reach one hundred percent again, and has now been back on the bike for a few weeks. Tixier is hoping to return at the Grand Prix of the Czech Republic at the end of July.

Vsevolod Brylyakov: Vsevolod Brylyakov has had such a rough time of it in recent years and, unfortunately, suffered another blow at the Grand Prix of Russia. Brylyakov tore his ACL in the second moto and will miss a significant amount of time. In fact, there is a chance that he will not be able to return at all this year. Kemea Yamaha are braced for that and have drafted Anthony Rodriguez in as a replacement.

Brian Bogers: After shattering his foot whilst testing a CRF250R in November, Brian Bogers started riding at the end of March. Bogers then encountered more issues through that time, unfortunately, as a small crack on his foot was identified. There is a chance that he may not race at all this season, but he should be able to get to a couple of rounds in September.

Brian Hsu: Brian Hsu dislocated his shoulder whilst training in Italy before the Grand Prix of Europe. The shoulder was put back into place immediately and it was stated that he would not be out for too long. There has been no statement regarding his recovery, a timeline on his return or anything else though. Both Hsu and Bud Racing have been contacted for a comment.

Arnaud Tonus: It has been a difficult couple of months for Arnaud Tonus, with a handful of knocks and injuries. A dislocated shoulder that was sustained at LaCapelle Marival was the most devastating, as it required surgery and will rule him out for another three months or so. It is going to be quite some time before the Swiss star is seen on track again.

Milko Potisek: Milko Potisek tangled with another rider on the face of a jump at the MXGP of Europe and, as a result, fractured his ankle in two places. Potisek got the green light from his surgeon to begin riding a little over a week ago and has confirmed to MX Vice that he will strive to return in either Belgium or Switzerland.

Once again, our resident stats guru, Paul Pearcy, provides a breakdown of the MX2 class going into Intu Xanadu. Famed more for its access to a shopping mall and McDonald’s than actual passing, the MX2 contenders will be looking to make their mark. Last year, Simon Laengenfelder reigned supreme and was unstoppable on Sunday, with no rider able to match his pace. If you were a betting man, who would be your winner?
