The Time Sheets: Matterley Basin

The British GP is always a highlight of the season, as the vibrant crowd always seem to bring something extra to the event. Of course, with eleven classes racing over the four day ‘MXGP Festival’ the race is like no other, and it is always interesting to see something unique, right? Despite the lacklustre weather, the second ‘MXGP Festival’ provided us with some excellent on-track action, as some interesting storylines developed in all classes.

Intriguingly, Thomas Covington made the long trip over from the USA to contest the EMX250 class at Matterley Basin. Obviously, being a top amateur from America most sat up, and took notice of the rides that Thomas Covington put in, as it would be really interesting to see how he stacks up against Europe’s best. Both Covington and [Jeremy] Seewer put on a good show for us – in the second semi final, also. Although there were no passes, I personally was on the edge of my seat the whole time – it was great racing. I was actually surprised to see this type of racing in a heat race, which really does not mean much in the grand scheme of things. But bragging rights were on the line, of course.

Jeremy Seewer actually opened my eyes at Matterley Basin; he is going to go far in the sport, I believe. It is actually surprising that the Suzuki pilot did not make a pass, as the lap times do indicate that he gained more time than he lost; when Jeremy lost some time on Covington, it was only a small amount – so, you would think that he would have been able to make a pass. Admittedly, Seewer pulled right onto the back wheel of Thomas many times, he just couldn’t get around the American. In my opinion, Jeremy was the fastest rider – that is the conclusion I came to from watching the race.

I do think that it is remarkable how consistent Thomas Covington was in this moto. Although he was racing in a foreign country, with different riders and he had to deal with jet lag, also. I think that this was just amazing, as rarely do you see a guy hit his marks on every lap, and his performance was faultless as a result – that certainly should not be overlooked. It is a quality that is impressive at this point in his career.

Put simply, the second MX2 race was amazing, as the battle witnessed on-track was nothing short of breathtaking. In amongst all of that, there were three guys pushing for their first GP victory – Glenn Coldenhoff and Jake Nicholls were two of those riders. Glenn, and Jake were actually battling it out for a large chunk of the race. However the Dutchman managed to get into fifth and put Jordi Tixier in between them both. It is actually very interesting to see that Coldenhoff was still running similar times to Jake, despite moving forward through the field; it shows just how close that battle was.

In the end I would argue that the 2:04.571 lap time that Jake Nicholls posted on lap fifteen, because of a big mistake, cost him the overall victory. It is quite clear that he had the speed to follow Glenn through the field. However Jake lost the tow when he made the mistake on the fifteenth lap, which meant that Nicholls had to pull onto the back wheel of [Jordi] Tixier again in a limited amount of time. I found it very interesting to see that both of these riders lap times did not alter much on the final lap. Usually you will see the riders back it down on the last lap, but there was so much on the line for them in the huge battle for second.
