MXGP World Championship
The Starter: MXGP of Czechia
A pre-race report from Loket.
The Grand Prix of Czechia, which is being held at Loket this weekend, is going to be a turning point in the FIM Motocross World Championship. Although there are still seven rounds remaining in the current term, the end is now well and truly in sight and thus tensions are going to begin to rise. The next fourteen motos are going to vanish in the blink of an eye.
Jeffrey Herlings and Antonio Cairoli have hogged a lot of attention thus far and deservedly so. The premier division may not be a priority for a lot of fans at this weekend’s round, however, as Pauls Jonass and Jorge Prado are tied on points and about to engage in a thrilling duel. There are more questions in that class, even though there is a lot of data to fall back on. It just seems as though, in comparison, a lot of answers have been provided in MXGP. The pecking order is well and truly established at this point. It is not like things cannot change at the top though, just as Herlings has learnt in some heart-breaking scenarios. Cairoli wants to make a run from this point on and be a little more aggressive too.
Reverting back to the MX2 division, a common question that will continue to be asked across the next two days is why is the red plate attached to the 250 SX-F that belongs to Pauls Jonass instead of Jorge Prado? Prado has more overall wins at this point in the season and most would typically use that as the decider. It comes down to moto wins though and, following an impressive streak of six through the first three rounds, that category favours Jonass at this point. It is worth noting that Jonass is particularly good on tracks like this, which is something that Prado has even recognised, so perhaps the points will have swung back in his favour by the time that Sunday evening rolls around?
Although Loket is a track that suits Pauls Jonass, it has caused him some pain in the past. There was that horrific crash two seasons ago, which hindered him for well over a year, that occurred on the steep step down after the finish line. There are some who will be very pleased to see that has been changed for this edition of the Grand Prix of Czech Republic. A roller has been placed on the exit of the turn after the finish, so that riders do not carry too much speed to the top of the hill, and then the step down has also been removed. It is just a flat downhill now. The change was made following the tragic death of Igor Cuharciuc last year. Curharciuc was an EMX85 rider from Moldova.
Those with a keen eye will notice that there is not a TM Factory Racing awning at the circuit this weekend, but why is that? Max Nagl sustained an injury last weekend that is expected to rule him out of Loket and then Lommel, which is obviously a crushing blow after a consistent season, and it has now been confirmed that the team are no longer working with Samuele Bernardini. It seems that this was a decision that was solely made by the manufacturer, rather than something that both parties agreed on, so stay tuned to MX Vice for more on that in the coming days.
When wandering the paddock this weekend, it is well worth keeping an eye on some odd pairings. Although new contracts will not be made official for another couple of months, just as they are every year, pen will hit paper very soon. There are only a few contracts that are already confirmed at this point. Motocross of Nations announcements are just a couple of weeks away as well, as the Grand Prix of Belgium is typically where some federations face the public. The Grand Prix contingent will turn their attention to the sand of Lommel once the Grand Prix of Czech Republic is out of the way.

//PEARCY Stats Preview MXGP Intu Xanadu-Arroyomolinos
Once again, our resident stats guru, Paul Pearcy, provides a breakdown of the MX2 class going into Intu Xanadu. Famed more for its access to a shopping mall and McDonald’s than actual passing, the MX2 contenders will be looking to make their mark. Last year, Simon Laengenfelder reigned supreme and was unstoppable on Sunday, with no rider able to match his pace. If you were a betting man, who would be your winner?
