The Latest Update: Ken Roczen

Ken Roczen suffers blow.

Following the update below, it was worth posting Ken Roczen’s latest snippet from social media for those who are not as active online. “Had an amazing day at SkyTop,” Roczen wrote. “My first full length motos today. Going to build race after race and have some fun.” The fact that he has now managed to complete a couple of motos is very positive, but how will he fare at Hangtown next weekend?

07 May (22:38)

After jumping back on a bike last month, Ken Roczen has been rather quiet. The HRC star posted an update on his social media account yesterday, however, which reveals how he is getting on. The statement can be read in full below. Remember, Hangtown will take place on May 19.

12 April (18:33)

Ken Roczen has had his final surgery, according to a recent statement from Team HRC. Roczen went under the knife in Vail, Colorado, to remove ten pins and a plate that were put into his right hand. Over the next two weeks, he intends to do some light riding and then transition into full testing for the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross opener.

We are also excited about Ken’s return; he just had surgery and will begin riding soon,” Erik Kehoe, the team manager at Team HRC, said in a statement. “Although he won’t have a ton of time to prepare or test prior to the start of the season, he has maintained his fitness at a peak level throughout his recovery and is eager to return. We look forward to helping him make a smooth comeback.”

29 March (23:28)

A small, but poignant, update from Team HRC. In a press release issued earlier this week, it was mentioned how much time Ken Roczen will have to prepare for the first round of Lucas Oil Pro Motocross. “He is scheduled to have surgery on April 11 in Vail, Colorado, where Dr. Viola will remove the pins from the German’s right hand,” the team confirmed. “The procedure is expected to be quick, with Roczen scheduled to head home the same day and begin riding on April 16.”

If everything goes well and Roczen does indeed return to riding on April 16, he will have a little over a month to prepare for Hangtown. The Lucas Oil Pro Motocross season will begin on May 19.

Ken Roczen visited his local physician on Tuesday for his first follow-up appointment. What happened once there? The stitches were removed from all five incisions and another x-ray was taken. It seems as though everything is on track, thankfully, as he still has his sights set firmly on the opening round of the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross series in May. Roczen will next visit a doctor in three weeks for another examination.

17 February (18:50)

Along with the official update from Team HRC, which can be read below, Ken Roczen shared his own graphic update on social media. “Once again there was a lot going on here,” he wrote. “Shattered hand, dislocation of all metacarpals and torn ligaments. Been in a lot of pain since the surgery. Sometimes we get tested in life. We take care of this sh*t, come back and try this again.”

Ken Roczen underwent surgery in Steadman Clinic in Colorado yesterday and, unfortunately, the injury was a little worse than most first thought. Honda Powersports shared an update via their social media account. “On Friday, Ken Roczen underwent successful surgery at the Steadman Clinic in Vail, CO, to repair injuries sustained during his crash in San Diego,” the statement said. “Unfortunately, the damage was more extensive than originally diagnosed. During surgery, Dr. Viola cleaned up a chip at the base of the thumb and hook of hamate, repaired the fractured second metacarpal with a plate and screws, and also repaired torn ligaments.

The initial prognosis is six to eight weeks, but Roczen will be reevaluated throughout his recovery. He will still attend multiple races and dealer appearances throughout the remainder of the season. Everyone at Honda wishes you a speedy recovery and can’t wait to have you back out there.” It remains to be seen if Roczen will attempt to return before the end of Monster Energy Supercross or just turn his attention to the outdoors.

12 February (23:44)

Honda HRC released an official press release earlier today, which contains more details on the injury that Ken Roczen sustained. “The German was evaluated by the Alpinestars Mobile Medical Unit, where it was determined that he has a fracture to the second metacarpal in his right hand,” the statement said. “Roczen will visit his physician on Monday for further evaluation, but surgery has already been scheduled with Dr. Randy Viola (the surgeon who performed all of his procedures in 2017) on Friday, February 16. Additional details will be released when they become available.”

“I’m completely devastated with the outcome of tonight,” Roczen said in the same press release. “The first thing I thought about on the ground was my team and all the hard work we have put in to get back to this point. I came into the corner with good speed, got on the gas, and then caught a ton of traction in the rut, lost my balance, and whisky-throttled the bike into [Cooper] Webb. My arm went in between his wheel and swing-arm. We’ve already made the necessary calls to Dr. Viola and are going to get everything fixed up so I can get back out there as soon as possible.”

February 12 (03:17)

Ken Roczen has spoken out about the incident that occurred in San Diego and also shared a graphic image, which can be viewed below. “Just want to forget about this weekend,” he wrote. “Surgery on Friday on my hand. Will give an update as soon as I get a CT scan. Dunlop tires hook up great! Might be able to be back pretty quick. Will know more soon.”

The sixth round of Monster Energy Supercross, held in San Diego, was certainly significant. A handful of heavy hitters hit the ground, but the incident that involved Ken Roczen and Cooper Webb certainly stole headlines. Roczen ran it in up the inside, then looped out coming out of the turn and became attached to Webb’s machine. Honda HRC have now released an update on their star rider.

After taking the holeshot and leading over half of the main event, Cole Seely relinquished multiple positions to take the checkered in fourth,” HRC stated. “Teammate Ken Roczen had a tough night, getting sidelined early after coming together with Webb. After initial evaluation by the Alpinestars Mobile Medical Unit, Roczen has suffered a fracture to the second metacarpal in his right hand. He’ll visit his doctor on Monday for further evaluation and more information will be released.

After failing to finish the main event, Ken Roczen now sits fourth in the premier-class standings. Thirty-nine points separate him from the current series leader. His status for the upcoming event has not yet been confirmed.
