Podium sets fantastic tone for Evotech Stevens KTM’s Maxxis season

Icy temperatures, freezing rain and mud – That’s what faced the Evotech Stevens KTM team for the inaugural round of the 2013 Maxxis British Motocross Championship at FatCat Motoparc near Doncaster this past weekend. With track conditions not having been the best to start with, the ACU opted to change to a wet-weather schedule on Sunday morning, which scrapped the super-pole and super-final sessions and shuffled times around a little.

The team’s rider, Steven Lenoir, showed that his off-season work had not been for nothing; he soon put down the second-fastest qualifying time behind world championship contender Mel Pocock in the morning qualifying session, setting the tone for the rest of the day.

The first MX2 race saw Lenoir getting off the very wet start in third. After getting past teenage rival Ryan Houghton, he set his sights on the leader, Elliott Banks-Browne. For much of the race, the two would do battle, one that Lenoir wouldn’t win. The second race, preceded by heavy snowfall, was tough by anyone’s standards. Lenoir did the best he could after losing his goggles in the horrendous mud, riding sensibly and not taking too many risks. With a second and a fourth at the end of the second race, Lenoir proudly stood on the podium, taking home second place overall on the day.

Commented team principal Matt Hutchins: “It’s been a fantastic day for us, a brilliant start to the season, with a second overall. Steven was second in the first race, battled with Elliott for the win a bit and in the second race it was just a case of surviving the conditions, which were really bad. It’s been a great result for the team, everyone’s been working really hard, Steven throughout the winter, and we started really early with the bike, so we’re really happy to be on KTM and at the front.

“I’d like to thank all of our 2013 sponsors: KTM UK, Dunlop, Acerbis, CI Sport, Renthal, TroyLee Designs, Alpinestars, RaceFX, Maxima, Haan Wheels, Aquaflow, RXR Protect, LR Designs, Twinair, Samco Sport, Race Bike Bitz, Hardcore Race Products, Raptor Titanium, Trevor Pope KTM, Muk Junkie, Vortex, Joe Miller Creative, Totally Dynamic, GSP MX, 365 Resourcing, Dantek Recruitment, Stevens Engineering and Evotech Race Engines & Suspension.”

Steven Lenoir (#685): It’s been good today, I’m very pleased to start with a podium. I qualified second, and in the first race fought for the lead all race long, and got second. Race two was unreal. I lost my goggles after the second lap, and then I was trying not to crash. I was fourth and second on the day, and I’m really pleased. My thanks to the entire team for everything, the bike was amazing.
