Much improved RJ Hampshire delighted with A1 exertions

Cutting a revitalised figure after his brilliant second at A1, RJ Hampshire spoke on his happiness with the bike, his appreciation of the team and how he approaches battling Jett Lawrence. Read the Rockstar Energy Husqvarna star’s comments from A1 in the post-race press conference.

Question: You were pretty vocal last year about not being happy with the bike. You don’t know until you get to the races if the changes are working or not. You were as good as I’ve ever seen you tonight, are the changes where you want them or was it just a good night?

RJ Hampshire: I mean it’s building. I mean each team and each manufacturer will go through it. I think we’ve seen that in the past and we went through it last year – 250 and 450. I work my ass off during the week and I know where I’m at on the weekends so that was just kind of where I was like. I knew my speed was good coming in. I mean I was a little bit worried, I didn’t really know how my bike was going to be in the whoops. That’s just kind of how it is right now. I know it was good on the rest of the track and when the whoops got eaten up l was still blitzing you know most of the night, so that was good.

I think we’re in a much better spot than where we were last year and it’s not even just the chassis on this bike, as they did a huge engine update for me as soon as we finished outdoors and you could tell my starts were good. I know that main event we kind of got tangled up a bit and that messed up my start, but all day I was crushing my starts. It’s great just having confidence and knowing that I have the bike to go out there and be able to battle for wins.

Question: How much of round one is trying to win the race and manage the race or are you just evaluating like trying to figure out where your bike is and how you feel and things like that?

RJ: I’ve never been in a situation where I could see the leader at round one so I mean that was just kind of where I was. I wanted to get out of here healthy and be on the box. With the track that we had tonight, it was more about clicking off your laps and that’s what I did. My start in the main event wasn’t great, but I just tried not to focus on anyone else besides myself.

Question: You said that was the best race you’ve done in a while – smooth and consistent. What do you have to do in the off-season to prepare yourself for racing? How did you change from last year to this year?

RJ: I mean my riding partners are some of the best guys in the business. I ride with Malcolm, Coop, AP and Christian every day and I felt like I handled that heat race really well with Jett right on me and in times past I feel like I might have folded.

For the main event, I didn’t get a great start and I knew my speed was decent. Probably in years past I might have rushed into something and made some mistakes. I can’t really recall many mistakes that I made that entire main event – just kind of focused on myself like I said and clicked off the laps.

To be there at the end was kind of what my goal was. It’s nice to give myself a chance at being on the box and we did that and yeah second is by far the best start I’ve had to a season.

Question: Your Husky looked quite a bit better than last year. You looked better than last year. The team has changed a lot over the years with Nathan Ramsey now team manager. What’s it like, the evolution of it? I mean Malcolm Stewart was leading the 450 main event doing awesome so Rockstar Husky, what’s it like now?

RJ: Man, we got a really good group and I think there’s love for all of us from management to Murph and all our mechanics. I don’t think there’s one guy that doesn’t get along on our team. I really can’t say enough good things about it. Last year was very tough and not just from the rider side but from the management side also. They got thrown into something they really couldn’t control and we didn’t really have options to go to so it was like “look riders just show up and do the best we can” and you know there’s going to be a change.

I signed my extension deal last year when the bike was not where I wanted it to be just because I knew I had to trust that Austria is going to figure this thing out and you know we did it. That was huge for me tonight. I think there’s going to be a lot more, we do have some other things coming, just want to keep building and progressing and you know hopefully we’re in this championship fight.

Question: You’ve been talking a lot about all the work involved from you and the team getting you guys to this point. I know you’re not on the centre step, but do you feel like this is a win being on the podium? What are your next steps and goals?

RJ: I felt like my bike handled pretty well all day today and the conditions were some of the gnarliest that we had. We were happy with where we’re at, we made a lot of progress. I didn’t win, but we had a solid main event, solid day really you know, we take that as a positive move into next weekend to be ready and try to do the same thing.

I got second last championship, but I wasn’t in the championship. I mean Jett just walked away with that. That’s kind of my goal is just to be in this thing and have a shot at it. If we’re going to be in this thing, I need to execute each weekend you know. Maybe next week we’ll have a better start and then can battle up front you know. Cam, me and Jett might be able to put on a little bit better of a show.

Question: There’s a lot of hype around Jett and it’s well deserved, but do you use that coming into a season as motivation?

RJ: No, I mean look what the guy’s done, I mean he’s won three championships in a row and completely dominated last year. I have one win and I’ve been out here a lot longer than him so like I said I’m going to show up and do what I can do every weekend whether you know I’m racing him or anyone else so I just control what I can control.

U.S.

NBC Sports, Peacock, and the SMX League announced the 2024 SuperMotocross World Championship (SMX) broadcast and streaming schedule, including the Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship and Pro Motocross Championship, sanctioned by AMA Pro Racing. All 31 rounds across the series, including exclusive live coverage of qualifiers, heats, Main Events and Motos will be presented on Peacock, NBC, USA Network, CNBC, and NBC Sports digital platforms.

Peacock is the home of the SuperMotocross World Championship Series in 2024, presenting comprehensive live coverage of all qualifying, heats, Main Events and Motos across both Supercross and Pro Motocross, spanning 31 rounds from January to September 2024. 17 races will livestream exclusively on Peacock. The platform will also provide on-demand replays of every race. Qualifiers and heats will be available exclusively on Peacock for every race throughout the season.

2024 marks the second year of the SuperMotocross World Championship Finals, fueled by Monster Energy which unified both disciplines of Supercross and Pro Motocross. The SMX World Championship culminates in a series-ending postseason playoff style of racing that features the best racers in the world competing for the sport’s ultimate title.

NBC Sports’ 2024 SuperMotocross World Championship coverage begins in under a month with the Monster Energy Supercross season opener from Angel Stadium in Anaheim, Calif., live on Saturday, Jan. 6, at 8 p.m. ET on Peacock and USA Network. An encore presentation will air the following day on Sunday, Jan. 7, on NBC at 2 p.m. ET and on Sunday, Jan. 8, on CNBC at 1 a.m. ET. CNBC will air a next-day encore for all 31 rounds across the series in 2024.
