Jett Lawrence gunning for more glory in 2023
Gifted Aussie ready for action.

While replicating his sensational 2022 will be no easy feat, the inordinately gifted Jett Lawrence enters 2023 ready to turn heads and excel yet again.

Following his extremely busy and successful year, which saw him secure the 250SX East title and his second consecutive 250 Pro Motocross crown, plus step up to the 450 at the Motocross of Nations and remarkably win his class to help Australia to third, expect the youngster to continue along his upward curve.
Still only 19 and with the world at his feet, the ultra popular Australian, who’s undoubtedly already one of the biggest stars of the sport, will come out firing in his swansong in the 250 class, where he’ll be racing West Coast, before he moves up to the 450 full-time in the summer.
“There’s definitely some unfinished business at Anaheim so we’re hoping to go back because obviously last year, I was going to go West and ended up getting injured and couldn’t race it,” Lawrence told Leigh Diffey on NBC.
“It’s kind of like we’ll sort some stuff out with Anaheim 1 and make sure we’re all good. So once we go 450, we can go there with no problems. Going back, I’m excited to be back under the lights at Anaheim. It’s going to be fun. Yeah, I just really can’t wait to get going with West Coast tracks again and how hard and slippery they are. It’s going to be exciting. Hopefully, it ends a lot better than last time.”
Upon looking back at his SX campaign last term, and he was a formidable foe for his adversaries to contend with, as he won four rounds, came second twice and bagged two thirds in a crusade where he finished on the podium in every round he competed in. Although there was the odd mistake here and there, Jett ultimately wouldn’t be denied, as he rode with an improved level of maturity and discipline that belied his tender years.
“My biggest thing last year was my mental side of things. I learned from Colt Nichols, it’s like a chess game, being smart with stuff,” he insightfully stated.
“One of the biggest things I took away was just staying out of drama. He did that perfectly in 2021. I stayed in the drama being a teenager just being an idiot. He stayed away from it, no one was enemies with him.
“I took that going into Supercross and outdoors and tried making sure I keep the drama away as much as I can. The biggest thing I’ve improved on is maturity on a bike, the way I ride and the way I act off the bike is completely opposite.”
Joining some bonafide legends of the sport in the form of James Stewart, Ricky Carmichael, Ryan Villopoto and Travis Pastrana to have held both an indoor and outdoor title at 18, this further underlines what a special talent he is.
Able to do things his fellow competitors can only dream of on the bike and riding with a tremendous level of skill, confidence and assuredness, it’ll take a magical effort to beat Jett this term. Although it won’t be easy and he’s set to get pushed hard by the likes of Austin Forkner, RJ Hampshire, Cameron McAdoo, Max Anstie, Levi Kitchen and Pierce Brown, all the indicators are ominous that he’ll make it two SX crowns to accompany his duo of MX titles.
It will also be interesting to see if he races some 450 supercross rounds, which has been mentioned as a possibility but now seems unlikely, to see how he stacks up and to give him a nice precursor before heading into the premier class permanently for outdoors.
Bringing so much to the sport on and off the track with his sensational ability and likeable personality, Jett, who’s entering his fourth year as a professional in America, appears destined for another year littered with upside in his quest to become an all-time great.

With the highly anticipated 2023 Motocross of Nations at Ernee fast approaching and Australia looming as one of the favourites, MX Vice has partnered with Australian motocross enthusiast Paul Gogarty to compile a list of all the Aussie teams that have been sent to the prestigious event over the years. Special thanks to Paul for putting in an incredible amount of work in compiling all this data (you can follow him on Instagram @muppett1).
