Interview: Glenn Coldenhoff

Dutch star on his quality day.

In the gruelling and physically demanding sands of Riola Sardo, Glenn Coldenhoff produced an excellent performance to claim second overall at the MXGP of Sardegna, with his second moto win unquestionably the highlight of his weekend. After struggling to find his rhythm in the opening race, the Dutchman went all out in the second moto, knowing pushing hard in these conditions would serve him best. And his decision paid off emphatically, as he put in a sensational ride to claim a statement moto victory.

After the race, MX Vice caught up with the Monster Energy Yamaha speedster to get his thoughts on his weekend in this exclusive MX Vice interview.

This interview conducted by James Burfield was also released as an MX Vice post-race podcast, presented by Acerbis.

MXV: Here with Glenn Coldenhoff. That was a nice ending to the day?

Glenn Coldenhoff: Yeah, it definitely was. It’s always good to get a moto win and especially this early in the season. The track was gnarly, very tough. I think I got a third place start and was pushing straight away.

That’s what I did wrong in moto one, you know, I tried to save some energy for the end and
on the sand tracks you need to go all in right away and keep going. That’s exactly what I did in the second moto and halfway through had a seven second lead and managed to control it and get the win

MXV: But that game plan was the right game plan because that track was brutal. So trying to conserve as much energy in the first one maybe helped?

GC: I didn’t get the overall win though (laughs). If I pushed a bit more in the first one then maybe I would have. Anyway, you know, the way I rode in the first moto, it got me even more tired, I was completely done, you know, because I was falling in all the bumps and all the holes. And so in the end, it’s better to push and you get less tired.

MXV: Really?

GC: Yeah, on a track like this. And yeah, like I said, I started too slow and I never really found that nice flow and so I got even more tired in moto one than moto two.

MXV: It’s great to see you smiling and also great to see you with a moto win and that performance. I think this was up there with some of your other special race winning performances where the Glenn Coldenhoff switch goes on and then you appear. You were just on another level.

GC: Yeah, my start was decent. I was up there straight from the beginning. And that’s half of the battle. Like I said on the sand tracks you have to push and especially how the conditions were today. If you start slow, you see what happened. In the end It was a good weekend and I’m happy with it.

MXV: Obviously last year, you showed some good form and had some great races. You’ve had a solid pre-season and you started great now, are you excited about things right now? Must feel good?

GC: Yeah, for sure. I mean, I had a rough start in Argentina, with my home situation, you know, changing quite a bit. It was challenging. I didn’t have anything extra, which I had this weekend. I got it here. So yeah, I am looking forward to continuing like this and keeping the confidence. Bike is good. Feeling good. So everything is in the right place to perform well. And we’ll see in two weeks’ time.

MXV: So fatherhood, how is that going?

GC: Yeah, it’s tough. I prefer just to sleep during the night now. I decided to switch rooms and not sleep with my wife at the moment, as she does all the work. In the beginning, you know, it was nice to help a little bit with the baby during the night. But if you have a tough training program, it’s impossible to combine this. So I decided to change rooms and it’s working well now. And my wife is doing a good job.

MXV: That’s great to hear. A lot of people say having a child makes you a little bit slower. But you’ve just put that to bed.

GC: Yeah, you know, when I’m at the races, my mind is really on racing. And I mean, it’s very nice to become a dad. And, you know, for sure when I get home tomorrow, I will enjoy it again. And I will even enjoy the Mondays more after a good race having my baby there. So it’s cool. It’s very nice.

MXV: Thanks for your time, and good luck for Switzerland.
