Another look at the title fight.

Published

How quickly things can change. Jeffrey Herlings reasserted his dominance at the tenth round of the FIM Motocross World Championship, the Grand Prix of France, and was on top of the world, but conversations now revolve around whether or not he will be able to retain the series lead over the next month.

It is well known at this point that Jeffrey Herlings crashed whilst practicing in The Netherlands on Wednesday and sustained a broken right collarbone. The injury, which has already been operated on, will rule him out of the Grand Prix of Lombardia and give Antonio Cairoli a chance to pull fifty points back in the title chase. Considering that the Italian event will take place in the power-sapping sand, it is highly likely that Cairoli will take full advantage and sit just twelve points behind his foe heading into the second flyaway event of the season. The gap has not been that small in two months.

The fact that Jeffrey Herlings suffered this crushing blow has prompted some to immediately claim that this was always going to happen, because of everything that has transpired since the year that he claimed his second world title. A couple of those injuries that he has sustained throughout his career were freak incidents though, which is often overlooked, and injuries that occurred on the 250F could almost be rendered irrelevant at this point. There were theories that he was overriding the smaller bike, thanks in part to his size, but that is certainly not the case on his current steed. How many times have you really seen him have a huge crash on that 450F?

There was that crash at Ottobiano at the beginning of last season, which left him with a hand injury, and then he had another big one in the slop at the Grand Prix of Russia twelve months ago. Aside from that though, it is difficult to name too many falls that Jeffrey Herlings has had since making his full-time debut on the 450F. Although this is familiar territory for him and those in his corner, it was certainly not inevitable. If really he was on riding the edge, like some tend to think, there would have been some small mistakes that stopped him from winning the last nine motos in a row. A rider who is out of control does not possess that kind of consistency.

Sticking with a similar theme, now is not the time to claim that this a part of the plan that Antonio Cairoli has had. Cairoli has mentioned that the speed in the class is higher than ever, which is fairly obvious, and that there is a lot of risk involved, there was no way that he knew that he could just bank on something like this taking place. Even he is dealing with a knee injury at the moment! There is a chance that this gives Cairoli a second wind though, sure, and he starts pushing a little harder, but then it is difficult to imagine that he has more to give. The frustration on his face confirms that he has given it his all at each race this year.

The way in which this title fight will develop depends on when Jeffrey Herlings returns. Skipping Ottobiano is the right thing to do, as he will still have the series lead and then take advantage of the weekend off. It would be a surprise to see him miss the next event in Indonesia and, based on the statement from his team, it seems that they expect him to be there too. Even if disaster strikes and he needs to miss an additional round, he would still be in the thick of this title hunt. The one thing that he can fall back on is that he is the best rider in the FIM Motocross World Championship and that fact alone should ensure that this is nothing more than a bump in the road.
