Heads & All Threads Suzuki – Matterley Basin

After covering fifteen countries the FIM World Championship finally landed in Britain and the Heads & All Threads Suzuki team headed to the legendary Matterley Basin in Winchester for round sixteen of the seventeen round world series, with Graeme Irwin aboard the RM-Z250 in the very competitive MX2 class.
The ‘MX GP Festival’ was ran over four days with the pro classes heading out on Saturday for their practices and qualifying, then with both races being held on Sunday.

Irwin was showing good speed in both practices on a dry Saturday and put in a very respectable 21st fastest time during qualifying, just 5 seconds off the front running pace.
The weather turned after the mornings warm-up on Sunday , with the rain starting off light but becoming heavier, putting some concerns over the quality of the afternoons racing to come. However, by the time the MX2 class went out for their first race the rain had eased and actually helped improve the tracks conditions, and Irwin headed to the line at lunch time for his first race.
As the gate dropped Irwin got a great start and was just outside the top 10 by the end of lap one, but fell back to 14th by lap three. As the order settled, Irwin found his rhythm and rode hard until a charging Harri Kullas of Finland made a pass with three laps to go, and Irwin crossed the line in a solid 15th.
Race two got under way at just before 15:00 and Irwin didn’t quite get the gate. On lap three he was just outside the top 20 in 21st but spared no time on climbing into the points, and on lap nine he had found his way into 17th. Despite his best efforts, two early fallers, Kevin Fors of Belgium, and Dylan Farrandis of France, managed to get past him after he had a small crash, but In the latter stages Irwin reclaimed 18th and that was enough to take 21st overall. A great result against some of the best in the world.
“I’m really happy with my weekends racing, I gave it my all and I’m happy to finally get some MX2 GP points. It’s the best GP finish of my career so far.”
The Heads & All Threads Suzuki team will be heading to Hawkstone Park, Shropshireon Saturday the 31st of August and Sunday the 1st of September for the penultimate round of the Red Bull Pro Nationals.
