Discussion: Jeffrey Herlings
Jeffrey Herlings on the Czech MXGP.
Jeffrey Herlings won his fifth race in succession at the Grand Prix of the Czech Republic and extended his series lead to thirty. It was another perfect day and on a track that has taken so much from him in the past. Herlings discussed all of that in this exclusive MX Vice interview, which was conducted on Sunday evening and is posted as a podcast elsewhere on the website.
Another 1-1 and just a solid day really. I feel like we should not forget that you broke your collarbone not too long ago though. This is still amazing!
Yeah, like five weeks ago, so to come out and have this performance was pretty amazing. Definitely on a track that is not my favourite one. I think we should look back to a pretty amazing day.
Were you worried at all in the second moto? Tony was pushing you more than he has done all weekend, but you kind of proved that you had it handled eventually.
Yeah, the beginning I did not feel in a good rhythm. I know I am pretty strong towards the end of the motos. I just felt like I was not riding one hundred percent. I tried, but I just made a lot of mistakes and did not find the right lines and broke some berms or whatever. I felt like I could do better. At one point I went from the forty-seven back to the forty-five lap times, then I started pulling away. I started growing during the moto and got better and better, so that was good
Do you feel like that is still an effect of the injury? That intensity right out of the gate where you just can kind of turn your mind off and go for it? That is maybe one thing that takes a while to come back once you miss some time.
Yeah. In three and a half weeks or something, because it happened on Wednesday, and then in three and a half weeks I only rode like four times. Then we got back to Europe and I was a bit jet-lagged and tired, so it was only a few days and now we are back in Loket. I rode a few times, but it is still like I did not ride like I normally have. Now we have got a whole two weeks. I can keep growing, keep riding again and getting better and better. Hopefully by Lommel we will make another step. Definitely Lommel is one of my favourite tracks and a deep, rough, sand track. Really excited to go there.
It has obviously been well-documented that you have had tough times here. That is probably an understatement. When you drive into this place, do you kind of get the spooks a little bit? Is it just a matter of getting here, getting through it and going home?
Yeah, when I went here it was like… It is not my favourite track, but just going to go out and try to have fun. Yesterday I did not want to take any risks, because if I really wanted to then I could have maybe made hard work of [Tim] Gajser and then next one was [Max] Anstie and then maybe Tony [Cairoli]. But I was like, “Okay, for this top position I do not need to be first [on Saturday].” I just thought there are no points on Saturday. I was like, “I do not want to get injured already on Saturday.”
Today was race day and I knew how valuable the points are. I worked so hard to get into the sixty-two-point lead and then missing one GP by an injury I got fifty in the reverse. So now we are building up again. We went back to twelve and now we are back to thirty again. Still going to be, I think, six more races and there are obviously two tracks I really like, Assen and Lommel. Still, a lot of things can happen. We have to get safe through all the races still.
That was completely under your control yesterday then? You just decided to back it down? You did not come in and change the bike completely overnight?
No, I did not change anything. I was in control. I knew if it would have been a thirty-minute moto, but by the time I got into second it was like three laps left. I was like there are no point of really going for it anymore. I was just happy with a second yesterday and especially because there were no points up for grabs. First, second or fifth it would not have changed anything for the results of the day.
You amazed yourself in Indonesia, the first one especially, but you still have that feeling? Like, I feel like people are forgetting that you were injured not too long ago. Are you falling into that as well?
I do not forget it, but definitely having an injury is one thing and then having a surgery and having a plate in and getting that removed and getting a bigger sized plate back in, then getting onto the antibiotics and then making the big Indonesia trip and the jet lag… Everything together was a pretty intense thing, but we came out there with ninety-seven points and we came out with a full fifty here. I think, after all, we cannot complain. It is just a shame. We have a thirty-point lead now, but it could have been over eighty.
Once you got back from Indonesia then, could you just moto down like no worries or was it still kind of you had to be a bit cautious?
Yeah. Obviously, the doctor said to not go too crazy. Instead of doing three times thirty-five-minute motos at Lommel, just build up and build up. Do like maybe maximum one hour riding a day, then have a day off and like this. Building up. The bone is getting together with the plate, but still it is not healed. That takes like six weeks or longer. Definitely riding motorcycles does not help getting the bone fixed and getting the bone growing together. It is only five or six weeks now, so it should be kind of getting healed. We keep going.
Finally, how close to one hundred percent do you feel you like you are at the moment? When do you think you’ll get back to the real you?
I think we are not that far off, but I think by Lommel or definitely after that in Switzerland. Normally I would say by Lommel we should be back where we were before getting the injury. It is not that I have been off the bike for six months. I have just been off the bike for almost three weeks, then another week off because we were in Indonesia. So, like I said, it has only been three weeks off. It is not like a long, long time. I am already feeling good, but I guess I will improve.

//PEARCY Stats Preview MXGP Intu Xanadu-Arroyomolinos
Once again, our resident stats guru, Paul Pearcy, provides a breakdown of the MX2 class going into Intu Xanadu. Famed more for its access to a shopping mall and McDonald’s than actual passing, the MX2 contenders will be looking to make their mark. Last year, Simon Laengenfelder reigned supreme and was unstoppable on Sunday, with no rider able to match his pace. If you were a betting man, who would be your winner?
