Barr Wins The Season Opener!

Martin Barr served notice that he is ready to go in 2013 with a comprehensive victory on the Travel 250f KTM.

It was the Ballyclare man’s first outdoor race in 2013, and he looked very comfortable on the
machine after finally getting some testing under his belt during the last four weeks.

The traditional Irish motocross opener, christened the “March Hare”, took place at a revamped
Donemana on Saturday. The alterations to the tack included some new jumps that slowed the riders
down and provided a better spectacle for the spectators.

The dry sandy track allowed the riders to get a real feel for their machines and their fitness before
the championships start in a couple of weeks.

But it was Barr who stole the show with some silky smooth riding and unique lines on the track as
he eased his way passed the fast starting 450 machines. Even Wayne Garrett on the 450 JAR by IFS
Honda could do nothing about the speed of Barr as he won all three races in impressive fashion.

Garrett, who was recently testing in Spain, was looking fast and solid in his first race of the season.
The three motos chasing Barr will prepare him well for the British Championship opener at FatCats in
a couple of weeks.

Third overall was Richard Bird. The former Ulster Championship was literally just back from riding
in Spain but he adjusted to the sand quickly and should be in the mix again in the Ulster and Irish
championship this season after beating Garrett in the final moto.

Ed Allingham made his debut on the MBO Yamaha and while not quite on his best form still showed
decent speed as he battled the 450 machines around him. Allingham should only get faster from
here and he had a good reference point with Martin Barr’s lap times during the day.

Michael McCammond has made the step up to the 450 machine and the former Ulster MX2 title
contender adapted well but he still has some speed to find to challenge Wayne Garrett and Richard

Jason Garrett was sixth overall and sported the new JT racing gear aboard the AJ Plumbing KTM. The
former Irish MX2 Champion had the speed to run with Richard Bird in the beginning and with a bit
more bike set up and a bit less arm pump he should be close to winning races again since his injury
in 2011.
