Ask Vice Anything: #47

The answers to your burning questions.

Published

on

After attending thirty-three events on different continents thus far this year, those of us at MX Vice have acquired answers to a lot of questions that you have. That is why things have opened up in this new feature. If there is something on your mind, email [email protected] or get in contact via the various MX Vice social media channels and then you will be featured here.

“If all the main players hit round one fit and healthy, who will be the first to take a moto win off the #84?” asked Phil Gee on the MXVice.UK Facebook page.

This is a good one. Now, it is time to face up to the reality that Jeffrey Herlings could dominate for quite a while and therefore reel off countless Grand Prix victories. Even if that does happen, which is likely, he will obviously be beaten from time to time. Who will be the first one to do that? Antonio Cairoli is still the best bet to pull it off, especially if he makes the gains that he anticipates. Will he come out ahead a lot? Probably not. It will happen occasionally though, one would presume, whereas that case cannot be made for others who are expected to contend.

A lot of fans believe that Tim Gajser is ready to step up and challenge.

Honda Racing Corporation

It seems the popular bandwagon to jump on this off-season is the Tim Gajser one. There are plenty of fans and pundits who believe, if he comes in one hundred percent healthy, that he can run the pace. There have been some strong rides from him this year, like that second moto at the Grand Prix of Turkey, but I am not quite there yet. Gajser has to prove something again in order to be dropped in that category, in my opinion, as it has been quite a while since he legitimately won a Grand Prix. There was that Swedish triumph a little over a year ago, but then he probably would not have won there had Jeffrey Herlings not had a mechanical issue.

This is where things get confusing though. Tim Gajser was simply phenomenal at the Grand Prix of Leon in that same season and has arguably not reached that level since. Is that level similar to what Jeffrey Herlings is doing now? It is impossible to say and the riders are just as dumbfounded when the question is presented to them. Another point worth considering is whether or not Gajser can even hit that level again. There have been some ridiculously hard hits in the last couple of years and those typically occur whenever he has tried to force the issue a little. – @_LewisPhillips

Romain Febvre is still searching for the form that won him a world title.

“Why does Dean Wilson not have a full-factory ride for next year?” asked Steve Milne on the MXVice.UK Facebook page.

This simply comes down to timing. The Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing squad decided that they could not keep him on towards the end of September and every factory contract was locked up at that point. Wilson knew his contract was coming to an end and did shop around, as he was linked with Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing. There was no longer an opportunity there when Aaron Plessinger elected to make the move up to the premier class though, as they were obviously not going to ditch their double champion, and that again is just a timing thing. How often does a manufacturer have such a promising graduate that they have to make room for? – @_LewisPhillips

“What would be reasonable expectations for Tom Vialle next year on the Red Bull KTM?” asked @MadsMikkelsen on the @MotocrossVice Twitter account.

This is interesting. There is no way that a pundit or member of Red Bull KTM can have expectations of Tom Vialle, as there is simply no way to know what he can do. This then, in my opinion, means that everyone is going to look at the signing as a success. If there are no expectations, it is easy to exceed those. What is his ceiling in the FIM Motocross World Championship? Comparing him to Mathys Boisrame seems to be a good benchmark. Vialle is obviously not on his level, not consistently anyway, and it seems as though Boisrame is a seventh-to-tenth-place guy in MX2. If Vialle can get into the top ten then that must be thought of as a success.

If Tom Vialle acquires a brace of tenths at the first round, which will be held at an undisclosed location, no one will celebrate him though. There is so much that is expected of a Red Bull KTM rider and those who are uninformed will question whether he deserves that position. Mathys Boisrame, who is the EMX250 champion, would get a pat on the back for landing results such as that though. Expectations are influenced by factors that should not even be taken into account in a lot of cases and Vialle is about to find out. Imagine if Red Bull KTM turn him into a podium contender in a single season though! – @_LewisPhillips

Once again, our resident stats guru, Paul Pearcy, provides a breakdown of the MX2 class going into Intu Xanadu. Famed more for its access to a shopping mall and McDonald’s than actual passing, the MX2 contenders will be looking to make their mark. Last year, Simon Laengenfelder reigned supreme and was unstoppable on Sunday, with no rider able to match his pace. If you were a betting man, who would be your winner?
