MXGP World Championship
Day One: MXGP of Germany
A recap from qualifying.
The first day of racing is complete at the Grand Prix of Germany, round eight of the FIM Motocross World Championship, and things have progressed in the way that most presumed. There were no earth-shattering surprises, although it was fairly shocking to see Antonio Cairoli kicking his steed, and the KTM-mounted riders further asserted their dominance.
There have been countless comments about how Teutschenthal felt different today. There have not been any major changes, aside from some tweaks to a few of the jumps, but yet the layout seems narrower and one-lined, a trait that has not been prevalent in the past. What could this be put down to? It is quite clear that more water could have gone down, as there was a severe lack of deep ruts, so that would have opened things up and added variety. There was not a single rut in the corner before pit lane, for example, whereas last year that was an extremely technical part of the circuit. It is worth noting that there were two ruts in that turn, but they were demolished before the qualifying heats.
It is safe to assume that Jeffrey Herlings will be difficult to beat tomorrow, just as he was today, but it is going to be difficult to push through the field if the track is as hard and fast as it was today. Herlings even acknowledged that at the Grand Prix of Latvia seven days ago. There is not much to say about him, besides pondering that point. It was just another day at the office and what most have come to expect after seven entertaining events. “I think they should really work on the track,” Herlings agreed in the post-race press conference.
“It is fun when you are up front. But, with the rocks and stones that you are getting hit by, I really think they should rip it way deeper overnight and put a lot of water, just so you get more options to make a pass,” he continued. “Hopefully they will work overnight on the track and get it a bit better prepared for tomorrow. The riding was good and very consistent today. I felt good, the speed was good and the bike was very good. I am looking forward to tomorrow and hopefully it is going to be a good day. I think that the start is definitely the key on this track, even if it rough or flat like today it does not matter.“
There were a lot of questions marks surrounding Romain Febvre entering the Grand Prix of Germany, for obvious reasons, but it seems that the damaged tendons in his arm are not going to hinder him too much. It was already a surprise to see him charging so hard in the practice sessions, as it was obvious that he was not really concerned about holding on through the choppy sections. A lot of doubts were quelled at that point and then he also managed to go the distance in the qualifying race. Although the motos will be significantly longer tomorrow, Febvre is in a positive position. It certainly could have been a lot worse.
The fact that the track did not develop too much would have helped Romain Febvre somewhat. There were other guys, like Clement Desalle, who were hurt by that though. Desalle crashed in the second turn and then failed to make significant progress, despite the fact that he did not lose too much time. Thirty-third was the position that he concluded the opening lap in, so he was buried, but then he only made it to twenty-first at the chequered flag. There is no doubt that he can be in contention for a spot on the podium tomorrow, as he typically thrives on this surface.
Will heading to the line in twenty-first be a disadvantage for Clement Desalle? One would think so, but then Julien Lieber was eighteenth in time practice and then rounded the first turn inside of the top ten in qualifying. Speaking of the Kawasaki riders, Tommy Searle started in the lower half of the top twenty and then got caught up behind Benoit Paturel in a rut. Searle was twenty-seventh at one point and moved to twentieth at the finish, so his progress was fairly similar to what Desalle did. Although the result may not seem too incredible on paper, there is more to it and potential for him to be closer to the top ten tomorrow.
Moving onto the MX2 division, Jorge Prado was simply dominant in that heat and seems as though he will be very tough to beat tomorrow. “Yeah, I got a good start and could finish the moto in first,” Prado said in the post-race press conference on Saturday evening. “Like Jeffrey said, the track was quite easy today and not rough. There were no lines and it was probably too good! There were not too many options, so everybody was really fast. If you got a bad start it would be quite difficult to come to the front, but I had a good start and made it good. I am happy with my race.”
Further down the order, Davy Pootjes withdrew early on with engine issues. Those actually occurred on the starting line, which is more common than one would typically think, so he knew what he was getting himself into. Two measly laps were completed before he was forced to abandon his bid for a respectable position on the starting line. It is likely that will stop Pootjes from fulfilling his potential in the motos tomorrow, which seems to happen more often that it should. Whenever it seems as though he is going to build some momentum, like today, he is struck by some poor luck.
Speaking of poor luck, the 114 Motorsports squad know more about that than anyone else. After Hunter Lawrence was told that he cannot ride this weekend, despite the fact that he passed the concussion test earlier on, Freek van der Vlist was the only rider beneath the awning. The fill-in ride came to an end just five turns into the qualifying race though, as he crashed out and injured his back. All he needs to do is rest for a week or two, then he should be fine for Matterley Basin, but he will not be racing tomorrow.

//PEARCY Stats Preview MXGP Intu Xanadu-Arroyomolinos
Once again, our resident stats guru, Paul Pearcy, provides a breakdown of the MX2 class going into Intu Xanadu. Famed more for its access to a shopping mall and McDonald’s than actual passing, the MX2 contenders will be looking to make their mark. Last year, Simon Laengenfelder reigned supreme and was unstoppable on Sunday, with no rider able to match his pace. If you were a betting man, who would be your winner?
