ClubMX San Diego Video and A2 Preview

Lopes and Nicoletti keep building.

It is true, they do leave the light on for you. Unfortunately, it’s a red light (if you know what I mean). If you watched our last YouTube video at the 1:58:00 mark it shows us walking out of Motel 6.

Words: Press Release | Lead Image: ClubMX

We are a small team on a budget doing the best we can with what we have. If that means being “fiscally efficient” with our travel budget – that is what we do. I try to be optimistic and lighthearted with the team, showing them how entertaining it is to watch the parade of “interesting” people come and go through the motel. They do not always agree with my outlook, but they understand the constraints of our situation. On the bright side, I told them when we get on the podium I will upgrade them to the Holiday Inn Express! That is a real motivator for them to make sure our bikes are in perfect working order at Anaheim 2.

LAST ROUND

I was very proud of our guys at San Diego. It showed that our performance was not a fluke and that we are in this for the long haul. It is truly a team effort from the first practice to the chequered flag. The team is communicating well and making the adjustments as needed.

Team Owner Brandon Haas has doubled his efforts with the riders to show them their strengths and weaknesses on the track. The level of detail that he shares with them is one of the main reasons the performance has increased. He also communicates with the mechanics to give instructions on the pit board during each session. I wish I had a photo of Enzo’s pit board while he was leading the heat race – it simply said “Kill or be Killed”.

ENZO LOPES

In a wild heat race, there was the unfortunate situation of a red flag. Enzo was leading for a bit, but got passed by RJ. When the red flag flew, they reset the field with Enzo in the lead of a staggered start. We had a ton of chatter on the radio, but we did not actually know how they restart the race. In all of that time, Enzo had his goggles on and they started to fog up. Then they showed the 30 second board and got going after that. By that time, he could barely see anything with his goggles being fogged up. If you go back and watch, you will see him airing them out and then ripping all of his tear-offs off. It was no fault of the goggles, but the heat he was generating and the lack of air flow. Considering all of that, he still finished second giving him a good gate pick for the main.

This is one more situation that we will add to training so the team will be more prepared. He went on to P4 overall on the night in San Diego. That was his best finish of his career so far. When you go back and watch the main event – he and Phil get a great start and Enzo settles into second for a few laps. Thoughts of the podium go through your head when you watch the race, but it is the progress that is more important to us. As he gets more comfortable running up front, the better he will do.

PHIL NICOLETTI

Pretty much the same for Phil. His starts have been amazing and he even passed Enzo at the beginning of the main event. The guys starting in second and third sent shock waves all the way back to South Carolina. He settled in for another top ten finish and now sits seventh in the overall points standings. Not bad! He will continue to increase his speed as the season moves on.

ANAHEIM 2 is the first Triple Crown race of the season. WHAT???? Shorter races that depend on good starts?? That might be right in our wheelhouse as the guys have been practicing starts during the week.

Today’s bikes are a combination of horsepower and electronics. Starting off a grate allows us to replicate those situations during training. We have to take all of the factors of the bike, the tires, the rider and even the altitude of the event into consideration when they train for starts. So far so good. In a conversation with Phil this week, we spoke about how easy/difficult it is to learn a track before the main event. He said: “Some people are just a natural at putting a plan together during track walk and then executing it in qualifying. They make adjustments as the track develops especially in the rhythm sections. It takes me a bit longer than some of the kids, but I’ll get there”.

A FEW NOTES

  • Once again, thank you to Feld Entertainment for another sell out. I’m not just saying that – we had some people trying to get in the stands and the only thing available was “standing only” tickets. Whatever they are doing, it is working. On our call this week we were informed that A2 is also sold out. It really does help all of us having more people watch the race.
  • Anaheim 2 is also the first Futures Race. It is a great program where the amateur racers get a chance to feel what it is like to race in the stadium atmosphere. Many of the racers have been through ClubMX at one time or another so we will take the time to communicate with them during the weekend. This program is a great way to help the racers transition from amateur ranks to the pro ranks on a real pro track. Show your support for these kids when you can. Some will excel and some will have their minds blown. It is incumbent on all of us to support the growth of the sport no matter what brand of bike they ride.
  • Next week will be the first East Coast round and I will have some announcements regarding our lineup. Please be patient with me as I put this together.
  • Please share our Episode 7 video on YouTube. Aside from the Motel 6 part, it is really good and I always appreciate your help.
