European Supercross
The Buzz: Losing Appeal?
Are you prepared for more of the same?
Supercross is arguably the most attractive part of our sport, as the bright lights and intense action tend to attract both fans and sponsors alike. It is hardly surprising that, with that in mind, the two ‘international’ European indoor events that run through the winter are looked at as highlights on a schedule that is otherwise full of traditional motocross circuits.
Paris-Bercy, now appropriately named Paris-Lille, occupies a spot in the record books as one of the most prestigious individual races. Geneva is smaller, but still recognised as an event that is worth taking note of also. Our statistics show that these races are still relevant, but, as technology makes the world smaller, could they be losing their appeal?
I would argue that is not the case, but some events have lost their spark. A European supercross is quirky, you could say, as the floor space is much smaller than what would typically be used in the United States and no rider would consider one of these events a priority. It is a great opportunity to please international sponsors and collect valuable knowledge, as well as a nice sum of money, hence why various champions and former race winners have remained loyal. Growing schedules on both sides of the Atlantic have threatened to make things more difficult though.
The programme at Paris-Bercy used to include elimination races and various other unique features, which created its spark that is mentioned above. The night shows now adhere to what is considered ‘normal’ in the USA, however, and fans only get to see the best of the best duke it out across thirty-one laps. That works in the United States as stakes are higher; promoters benefit from a star-studded field and a longer track that is much more technical too. Should there even be a direct comparison? An event like Anaheim 1 is not even comparable to what you would find in Europe.

Monster Energy
I would argue that fans have started to compare the two worlds since the Paris-Bercy event was moved across to Lille. When the Palais Omnisport played host to the event, fans were almost right on top of proceedings. That experience is not replicated anywhere else in the world. Now, however, half a stadium is used and the fans are not as recognisable, as they are seated a little further away from the action and spread out.
The track is much more normal also, as no hallways are used to extend it. Holes start to appear when you list these things and, although you may be weary to call it worse than what it was previously, it is certainly different now. Those factors mentioned there are what made Paris-Bercy so special, in my opinion, and why it was much more recognisable than Geneva. Now it is more of the same, so fans may be reluctant to support both.
Perhaps that is why another change of location could be on the cards? A setting similar to what has been used in the past could inject some excitement back into the event. Then, suddenly, Geneva is again the only opportunity to see these riders on a more traditional supercross track. Arnhem could be considered an alternative too, although I’d be reluctant to state that it is in the same league as Geneva and Paris-Lille. Poor promotion and a sub-par turnout from riders led to numbers that were incredibly disappointing.
The Monster Energy SMX Cup is obviously an intriguing thing to chuck into the ring here, as that was extremely different and boasted a superb entry list. Fans refused to support that too, despite all of that, although viewing figures around the world suggest that the appeal was there. It’ll be most intriguing to see if Geneva this weekend produces the same electric atmosphere that it has in the past, as it would be a nice reminder of what a European supercross has to offer.

Jeffrey Herlings and Pauls Jonass enrich a full ADAC MX Masters class, as the second half of the season begins with all four classes ready to race in Gaildorf.
Words: Press Release | Lead Image: KTM
On August 5th and 6th, the ADAC MX Masters will start the second half of the season on the traditional track in Gaildorf. The fans can look forward to a full program in the four classes – ADAC MX Masters, ADAC MX Youngster Cup, ADAC MX Junior Cup 125 and ADAC MX Junior Cup 85. Max Nagl (D/KMP Honda Racing powered by Krettek) starts the race as leader of the ADAC MX Masters standings, where he battles against the two motocross world champions Jeffrey Herlings (NL/Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) and Pauls Jonass (LVA/Standing Construct Honda MXGP), who come as guest starters to the circuit. Oriol Oliver (E/WZ-Racing) starts the race as leader of the ADAC MX Youngster Cup, Mads Fredsøe (DK/Sturm STC Racing) leads the ADAC MX Junior Cup 125 and Jarne Bervoets (B/Bervoets Racing Team) is the leader of the ADAC MX Junior Cup 85. A large supporting program with many activities and music during the day and evening ensures that entertainment in the training and racing breaks. Fans can watch the races both on site at the race track and in the free live stream.
After a short summer break, the ADAC MX Masters is starting the second half of the season with a very full international field. The reigning champion Max Nagl and his usual strong competition in the title fight such as Tom Koch (D/Kosak Racing Team), Adam Sterry (GB/KTM Sarholz Racing Team), Henry Jacobi (D/KTM Sarholz Racing Team), Maximilian Spies (D/ Kosak Racing Team) and Jordi Tixier (F/KMP Honda Racing powered by Krettek) are expecting two absolute high calibre opponents in the two guest starters Jeffrey Herlings and Pauls Jonass. Both would like to use the race to find their way back into the high racing rhythm after injury breaks. The record Grand Prix winner and five-time World Champion Herlings became 2008 ADAC MX Junior Cup Champion in the 85 cc class, Jonass won the same title in 2011 and became MX2 World Champion in 2017. Also Noah Ludwig (D/KTM Sarholz Racing Team), Nico Koch (D/Becker Racing), Jakub Teresak (Enduro Koch Racing), Stefan Ekerold (D/Team Bauerschmidt MB33), Tim Koch (D/VisuAlz Production), Boris Maillard (F/stielergruppe.mx Johannes-Bikes Suzuki), Lukas Platt (D/KTM Sarholz Racing Team) and many more roll highly motivated to the starting gate.
In the ADAC MX Youngster Cup, Oriol Oliver will try to extend his championship lead over his WZ Racing teammates Cato Nickel (D) and Mike Gwerder (CH). In addition to this trio, which left its mark on the first half of the season, Peter König (D/KTM Sarholz Racing Team), Rasmus Pedersen (DK/Filten Racing), Jens Walvoort (NL/KTM SB Racing), Edvards Bidzans (LVA/Sixty Seven), Jan Wagenknecht (CZ), Scott Smulders (NL/ KMP Honda Racing powered by Krettek) and Marnique Appelt (D/Becker Racing) have already clinched a whole squad of other drivers running and overall podium places.
After an event break, the ADAC MX Junior Cup 125 starts again in Gaildorf. Mads Fredsøe leads there ahead of Maximilian Werner (D/Fantic Factory Team Maddii) and Vitezslav Marek (CZ/Cermen KTM Racing Team). In the youngest racing class, ADAC MX Junior Cup 85, Jarne Bervoets (B/Bervoets Racing Team) is leading after two events ahead of Áron Katona (HU/HTS TM), Dean Gregoire ((NL/Voss KTM Racing) and the newly crowned Junior World Champion Dani Heitink (NL/DH-MX).
In addition to the races, there is a full supporting program for the spectators in Gaildorf with a large fan mile, freely accessible paddock and a large marquee with live music on three evenings. Adrian Guggemos will impress with spectacular vehicle handling and stunts at several Red Bull Freestyle Trials shows on both days between races. The young visitors have the opportunity to try out small quads and PW50 motorcycles on the Yamaha quad course. On Sunday from 12.15 p.m. to 12.45 p.m. Jeffrey Herlings, Pauls Jonass, Max Nagl, Tom Koch and Maximilian Spies will be available for the fans at the autograph session at the ADAC MX Masters truck. The Zillertal band “Höllawind” will start a hearty evening in the marquee on Friday from 8 p.m. On Saturday the rock cover band “Lost Eden” will play.
All races from Gaildorf will be broadcast in the free live stream.
