British Supercross signs off in style!

What a great final championship round of the Future West British Supercross championship last night! The LG Arena had a healthy crowd in to see the champions crowned and not one of the classes let anyone down.

All the way from the auto class right up to the final Supercross Pro class there was bar banging, spectacular crashes and controversy, all of which you’ll be able to see here on MX Vice in the next couple of days when our new videographer, Adam Giche, edits the action for his first video of racing for the year ahead.

With the recent switch in sanctioning bodies from the ACU to the MCF it was going to be interesting to see if it would effect the series in anyway. The good news is there certainly wasn’t any negative effect. The atmosphere was a positive one down on the arena floor, in the pits and in the stands.

The track itself certainly flowed and the riders probably carried more speed than they ever have in the series, they were certainly hauling ass down the first rhythm section off the start that’s for sure!

There were no real surprises through the qualification and all the big hitters got through to the main events.

In the Auto class Luke Williamson did what he had to do and took the win and with it the title. He was chased home by Liam Brosnan and Bobby Bruce and credit to all of them as they bobbed up and down through the whoops. It was a good line up of the young guns too and that’s really encouraging too, we have to get these kids involved at this age if this sport of ours is going to prosper like we all hope.

Talking of prosperous kids, Harry Kimber rubber stamped his dominance on the 65cc class on his Twisted 7 Kawasaki by clean sweeping the series with another emphatic win. Callum Beeken took the runner up spot with Reagan Brooks nailing down third.

Jordan Eccles looked great as he took the win the small wheeled class but he was kept honest by Dylan Woodcock. Taylor Hammal rode a smart race and stayed out of trouble to claim third on the night and with it the championship.

Gradie Featherstone wrapped up the very competitive Supermini championship with another win ahead of Connor Hughes and Scooter Webster as the three of them looked very accomplished.

In the Youth Lites class James Harrison rode a very calculated race from near the back of the pack to take the win over Chris Bayliss and Michael Eccles who was putting his two stroke in the mix. James Dunn rode into the back of  early race leader Ben Putman on lap three but regrouped and did enough to take the title.

In the quad championship Irishman Leon Rogers took the win on his British SX debut ahead of Sam Bryan who also picked up his first points of the series. Jamie Clark stayed out of trouble to finish third on the night but take home the championship.

The Clubman Lites was a virtual repeat of the Youth Lites with James Harrison bagging another win ahead of his closest competitor all night – Chris Bayliss – and Michael Eccles claiming another third on the podium. It was Bayliss who wrapped up the championship though.

George Purchase took his first British SX title in Clubman Open even though he didn’t make the podium. James Harrison yet again stood on top of the box, flagged once again by Chris Bayliss who chased him home. Stuart Morrison tried all he could to take the title but third on the night just wasn’t quite enough.

No doubt about it though, all eyes were on the Supercross Lites final. Coming into the final round Neville Bradshaw and Nicolas Aubin were tied on points, so the maths were easy. Who ever beat who won the title and what a race it was! In the end it was Adam Chatfield on the Buff Honda who won but that almost went unnoticed, even though he had an awesome battle with Jack Brunell (Rabbit Racing Kawasaki) and only just got into the lead going into the last lap. The battle for the crown was so intense that’s where the focus was really at. Buildbase Honda rider Aubin had the early advantage after Bradshaw was buried in the pack down further down the field. That all changed when Aubin got on the back of the dash for cash winner Ashley Greedy (LPE/Maxxis/Henderson Kawasaki) and the Welshman took him high in berm in attempt to protect his position. Bradshaw seized his chance, gained ground and made his move on the Frenchman in the next corner and soon moved past Greedy too. Aubin, who had been having treatment all week after a big practice crash dug deep and turned up the wick, eventually passing Greedy and going after Bradshaw and with three corners to go he dived up the inside of Bradshaw and the two came together. The pair of them just about stayed on but it was Nev who just held his advantage to the flag and with it the British Supercross Lites crown, much to his obvious delight and his Evo-Tech Honda team.

The main event British Supercross race had a lot to live up to after that and to be fair it nearly delivered equal excitement. Tom Church, fired up to win the championship, got a flier on his Fowler’s KTM and set about proving there’s still plenty of fight left in him even though he’s called it a day on full time pro racing. TC set some blistering early laps, the quickest of the race in fact and opened up a comfortable lead as the others fought it out in his wake but come mid race he started to tighten up and the rest started closing. The key moment in the outcome of the race was with about six laps to go when he slid out on take off through a rhythm section and landed on some haybales. Somehow he rode along the top of them and rode it out ‘Carmichael style’ before composing himself to take it to the flag and take the title. Behind him Jack Brunell rode a blinder to work himself into second and judging by his dad’s reaction his old man was proud of him for getting one back on Chatfield who just pipped him in the Lites final. Bradshaw, who was still probably buzzing from his Lites win fought hard with Aubin all over the back of him to finish fourth and fifth respectively.

So there you go, that’s what went down for another year and we’ve got a feeling at MX Vice that next year’s Future West British Supercross championship will better still. This series rounded off with a different buzz than previously, it’s hard to pin point it exactly but whatever or wherever that vibe was coming from long may it continue. Impressive Second for Benistant at MXGP of Trentino as Bonacorsi Delivers Career-Best Result

Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2’s Thibault Benistant returned to form at round four of the MX2 World Championship with an impressive runner-up finish at the MXGP of Trentino. Adding to the team’s success in Pietramurata, Italy, was Andrea Bonacorsi, who delivered a stunning career-best result of sixth overall in front of his home crowd. At the same time, Rick Elzinga put in a hard-charge for ninth overall.

In Race One, Benistant got off to a great start and ran third before passing Sascha Coenen on Lap 12. Continuing to ride with a high pace, the French sensation closed in on the eventual race winner, Kay de Wolf, during the final laps of the race and crossed the line just under four seconds adrift of victory.

Another strong start in Race Two saw Benistant quickly engage in a battle for a place on the podium. Holding fifth until just past the halfway point of the race, Benistant capitalised on a mistake by Mikkel Haarup and moved into fourth. From there, the 198 chased home his teammate Bonacorsi and secured fourth for second overall. As a result, he has regained third position in the MX2 Championship Standings.

Bonacorsi, spurred on by his passionate home crowd, delivered a career-best race and overall result in Pietramurata. Despite having a rider fall in front of him at turn one, the 20-year-old put in a spirited ride through the field to finish 12th in Race One.

In Race Two, ‘Bona’ emerged from the first corner in second and immediately gave chase to the early leader. After slipping to third on lap seven, he maintained his impressive pace and kept the position to the flag. Following his breakout ride, Bonacorsi maintains 12th in the championship chase, but has closed the gap to the top 10.

One week on from his impressive sixth-place finish in Sardinia, Elzinga carried that same speed and momentum into round four and placed fourth in Race One. An unfortunate crash at the start of Race Two gave the Dutchman a lot of work to do on a circuit that proved challenging to pass on. Maintaining his razor sharp focus, the 44 fought back to 13th, which was enough to maintain ninth position in the MX2 Championship Standings.

The next round of the FIM Motocross World Championship will take place in Agueda, Portugal, on the weekend of May 5th.

“I’m not a ‘hard-pack’ rider, but I tend to ride well here. I felt good on the bike all weekend and put in a really good ride in Race One after making a mistake. I really pushed and made it all the way up to fourth. So, I was happy with that. In the second one I had another good start but in turn one a few of us crashed and my bike got tangled with another rider. It took two laps to catch the pack, but I kept pushing and ended up in 13th. My speed is good, and I’m happy with my riding, so we’ll keep working ahead of Portugal.”
