The thousands of residents and visitors who flocked to Weston-super-Mare seafront over the May Bank Holiday to make the most of the weekend’s scorching weather got a little more than they bargained for thanks to five of the UK’s top Freestyle Motocross riders.
With round two of the Red Bull Pro Nationals lined up for the Somerset resort on May 18-19, promoter e22 Sports staged a series of FMX promo shows in Weston’s Princess Royal Square on Sunday. The programme kicked off at midday and extended into the evening with a floodlit show culminating in a huge firework display.
After flying in from his home in Southern Spain, Chris Birch was joined by fellow FMX athletes Jamie Squibb, Dan Whitby, Dave Wiggins and Arran Powley for the free shows which drew massive crowds of amazed onlookers.
“That was incredible,” reckons Chris. “The crowds were huge and really loved what they were seeing. It’s great jumping in front of people who’ve never seen Freestyle before – the atmosphere was amazing, especially when I started breaking out the backflips!”
In total an estimated 13,000 people saw the four shows making it an ideal slice of pre-publicity less than two weeks before the Red Bull Pro Nationals arrives.
“This was the first time we’ve welcomed Red Bull to the town and the huge crowds were amazed by the fantastic displays of stunts and tricks that were performed,” says Cllr Felicity Baker, Executive Member for Tourism at North Somerset Council. “This was a great curtain-raiser for the main event on May 18th and 19th.”
Matt Bates, Managing Director of series promoter e22 Sports, is delighted with the response to Sunday’s shows.
“It couldn’t have been a better promotion for the Red Bull Pro Nationals tour coming to Weston-super-Mare and we can’t thank the North Somerset Council and Red Bull enough for this amazing opportunity in showcasing our sport to such a wide and fresh audience,” says Matt. “I’m keeping my fingers crossed for May 18th and 19th as I truly believe that if the weather is on our side we could see record crowds attending round two.”
