MXoN News: Team Belgium

Team Belgium name their riders.

Belgium name their riders for the Motocross of Nations, Jago Geerts steps onto YZ450FM.

Team Belgium announced their riders for the upcoming Motocross of Nations this evening, as most expected. It’s brilliant that Belgium are sending a team to RedBud, of course, as some were concerned that the former winners would not field a squad in the United States, because of budget issues. Johan Boonen, who is hoping to lead the nation to their sixteenth win, has named a surprising line-up that strays from what most would have expected.

Jago Geerts will step onto the YZ450FM for the event in what will be his international debut on the big bike. What makes that most surprising is that he’ll remain in the MX2 division next year, no matter if he claims the title or not, but pushing him into the premier division makes room for Liam Everts to take part in the MX2 category. Everts is no stranger to the historic race, having made his debut at the Motocross of Nations one year ago, and has come on leaps and bounds in the last two months. Could he battle for a top-three spot in the individual MX2 rankings? Sure.

Jeremy Van Horebeek will compete in the Open division, which was to be expected, and it’s been confirmed that he will retire at the end of the current season, so this will be his final Motocross of Nations. Van Horebeek piloting a Beta at the MXoN will be a good way for the manufacturer to start their American motocross programme too. It all works! Although this team is a surprise, there was only one other way for Team Belgium to go. Van Horebeek, Geerts and Brent Van Doninck would have been a great team too.
