Anstie delighted after his superb weekend

Max Anstie kicked off his busy weekend of action in fine style by securing victory in the opening round of the Australian Supercross Championship on Friday night.

Having qualified second behind teammate Wilson Todd and won his heat race, this served as a good precursor for things to come, as the experienced Brit carried his pace into the main event.

Although he narrowly missed the holeshot, his fast start left him ideally placed to quickly scorch into the lead. From here, he immediately flexed his muscles and never looked back, as he handled the conditions with aplomb on his way to claiming victory by a whopping 10.20 seconds.

The fact he clocked the fastest lap, nearly three quarters of a second quicker than the next best, underlined what an accomplished ride he produced. “I loved it today. I cannot thank the boys at Honda Racing Australia enough for getting me into this championship. Getting the win at round one was a great way to repay them and it was also important for me to blow the cobwebs off, after that long flight over to Melbourne,” a delighted Anstie explained afterwards.

Pulling double duties, Anstie impressively backed up his strong outing from the previous evening by carrying his momentum into the World Supercross Championship on the Saturday. Feeling comfortable on the bike and familiar with the surface, Anstie jumped out of the gate rapidly before going on to triumph in the opening SX2 race, just edging the excellent Shane McElrath.

Using that as a springboard for the final two races, where he finished third and second respectively to claim second overall behind eventual series winner McElrath, there was much to admire about his polished output that saw him finish on every step of the podium.

“It was a great night here in Melbourne. We did well. Got off to a good start in the first main and got out front and got the job done. It brought everything pretty close going into mains two and three. Had some great battles, it was a good night. The whole team did a great job with the bike. To have Factory Connection over here, we really dialled the bike in well. It was nice, these last couple of rounds with the World Supercross in their pilot season,” Anstie reflected.

“To experience the fans in all these different places – Cardiff was obviously amazing for me and here in Melbourne – I was blown away with the crowd and the fans. We ended up P2, P2 on the night and P2 in the championship. We’ll keep working. A lot of positives and looking forward to what the future brings.”

Next up on the horizon for Anstie is round two of the AUSX series this weekend in Adelaide, where he’ll be eager to replicate his outstanding efforts in his quest to claim the SX2 title Down Under to end his year on a high.
