All eyes were on the opening round of the Italian Championship earlier today, as pundits were eager to see Antonio Cairoli go head-to-head with Jeffrey Herlings. The battle never materialised, however, as Herlings crashed in the first corner of the opening moto and his day ended there. There were immediate concerns that he had sustained an injury, but he has confirmed that there are no issues.
“The crash was not too bad but getting run over wasn’t much fun,” Herlings said in a press release. “I was lucky that it wasn’t too bad but the bike was pretty damaged so that meant it wasn’t possible to continue. A shame we couldn’t race; at least this is an upgrade from this time last year when we came away with a broken hand! Aside from today I’m feeling good with the bike and we’ll go again next week.“
Jeffrey Herlings will travel to the United Kingdom for his next race, as he is set to take part at the Hawkstone International. Antonio Cairoli, on the other hand, will stay in Italy and race the second round of that series. Watch the footage of Herlings’ crash below.
