Saudi Arabia hosted the first stage of the 2022 Dakar Rally today. The first leg of the opening stage, which will finish tomorrow, concluded in 55 minutes. GASGAS’ Daniel Sanders leads with that time, closely followed by Pablo Quintanilla and Ross Branch. The event is going to cover 8,000 kilometres over the next couple of weeks. Much like one year ago, many former motocross riders are tackling the treacherous event in an attempt to fulfil bucket list items.

- Andrew Short (Monster Energy Yamaha Rally Team) ended day one in ninth place, a result that is not too dissimilar to how he started a year ago. Short was twelfth at this point last time.
- Rui Goncalves, who spent much of the last year helping Antonio Cairoli in his bid for a tenth title, ended day one in twenty-second with the Sherco TVS Rally Team.
