Tim Gajser has won the qualifying heat of the MXGP class in Portugal. Gajser took the holeshot and was leading from start to finish. Jeffrey Herlings was following him for the entire race and started to put the pressure on Gajser in the closing stages. Gajser kept his head cool and won the race in front of Herlings and Romain Febvre. Calvin Vlaanderen and Pauls Jonass were rounding out the top five.
Brian Bogers was riding in fourth position till he crashed and damaged his bike. Due to this he was forced to retire!
