90 Racing win the MCF Grand Slam!

The weekend of 29th and 30th saw the sun shine on Culham Park for the 2012 MCF Grand Slam event with over 300 competitors filling the paddock from the MCF youth clubs.  The rain that hampered the Red Bull Pro Nationals persisted through until Wednesday leaving the team with a huge amount of work to achieve in just two days with parts of the circuit knee deep in standing water, the hard work paid off however with the circuit in excellent condition, albeit with a few damp patches, for the two days of racing.

The event saw the best of the best from the clubs coming together to battle it out for Grand Slam champion honours and it was the 47 AMX competitors that took to the circuit first with Qualifying and two races on Saturday and a further two races on Sunday. It was a three way battle throughout the weekend at the front of the pack with Ringwoods Lewis Trickett eventually showing his class and taking four wins from four, holding off the challenges of Rob Clitheroe, racing for Newton Le Willows, making some last lap moves to take second overll ahead of Tony Cuddy, riding for Lee Cards East Kent team. Fwllow Newtons rider Will Orritt took fourth from Ryan Allen (South West MXC) and Luke Kenningley (Newton Le Willows). The AMX turned out to be a strong class for Newton taking the top points haul of 968.

Rookies were next up with Matty Callaghan showing his form taking the maximum point haul of 220 for Newtons. East Kents Ben Franklin tried his hardest to hang on to Callaghans shirt tail throughout the weekend but had to be content with second place with three race runner up spots, ending up three points clear of Daryl Wallis competing for 90 Racing. John Waghorne (East Kent) and Josh Broadway (South Somerset) consistently finished in the top six to take fourth and fifth spots ahead of Steven Robinson (East Kent) who took sixth on count back. It was east Kent that took the top spot in the Rookies with over 1000 points.

It was then time for the amazing spectacle of over 40 Auto riders hurtling down the start straight into turn 1, closely followed by a swarm of orange and yellow vested parents. Vinnie Ray Guthrie was setting fastest laps but unfortunately was plagued with bile problems, denting his chances of taking the top honours. Raife Braodley from the East Kent squad took both wins on Saturday and two thirds on Sunday was enough for him to take the victory by a slender 4 points form 90 Racings Josh Robson. Harvey James, representing South West MX took the final podium spot posting two strong second places on Sunday. Two points separated Jake Swann (East Kent)  and Aaron Brown (Newton) with 90 Racings Jaygo Beasty in sixth. Once again it was East Kent that took the top points for class.

A full line up of 48 65cc Junior riders took to the track in leg one with Ike carter leading the way for East Kent but it was soon to be Scott Russell who took up the running on his way to a full house of victories. Lewis Hall took two seconds on Saturday but an unfortunate crash put him out for Sunday. 90 Racings Ryan Thomson took the second podium position ahead of South Somersets Connar Ford and Ike Carter (East Kent), Ford taking the final podium spot through his better Moto 4 position. Preston Williams (South Someret) and Danny Clarke (90 Racing) rounded out the trophy placings. It was 90 Racing that shone in the 65 class taking nearly 200 points more than their nearest rivals.

The Small Wheel class saw Tom Lockhart, another east Kent rider, take three wins from four to secure the Grand Slam title. Harry Pritchard (Ringwood) and Drew roe (Newtons) battled it out for runner up honours with Pritchard taking it by a meagre four points. South Somerset duo Bradley Flagg and Casey Williams took fourth and fifth with Jake Parker (Ringwood) rounding out the top six. East Kent narrowly taking the top points haul again from South Somerset.

Mitchell Lewis showed his class on the Honda in Qualifying, setting a lap time over 2 seconds faster than his nearest rival, This was all looking good for East Kent with Lewis convincingly taking all four victories. Only one slip stopped South Somersets Billy King from taking all four runner up spots but he still scored well enough to stand on the second step of the podium finishing just ahead of  90 Racings Alfie Mountford. Jake Ryan put in some strong performances for Newton LE Willows to take fourth ahead of fellow Newton rider Aaron Rowe, who along with James Heys provided the music for the Saturday night party, and South Somersets Callum Ford. Strong performances from the east Kent riders once again secured them top points for the class.

Following on from the individual presentations it was time to reveal the top teams for the weekend. Third place went to 90 Racing with South Somerset in second, losing out to East Kent following the result from the last race of the day.

There was still one last award to be presented as the Grand Slam is also the culmination of the yearlong Elite Youth League with clubs posting results from their club events. South Somerset, winners for the last two years, had to settle for third place this time around with East Kent in the runner up slot and 2012 League Championship going to 90 Racing MX with a very proud Lynsey Hamer stepping up to lift the trophy along with the £4000 worth of event insurance for 2013.

Once again the event proved to be extremely popular, pitting the clubs against each other in a friendly but competitive atmosphere. With more clubs joining the MCF for 2013 the coveted League trophy will be battled for harder then ever.
