Phoenix Tools: The Sixth Round

Insight from the Phoenix Tools squad

· 2 minutes read

Phoenix Tools Apico Honda Racing returned to the historic circuit of Hawkstone Park this past weekend, as the venue hosted round six of the Maxxis British Championship. Rain threatened to halt proceedings, much like at the previous round, but sunny skies prevailed and created pleasant conditions for racing.

Qualifying was a successful exercise for the two Phoenix Tools Apico Honda Racing riders, Gert Krestinov and Carlton Husband, as the former set the fourth-fastest time and was joined inside of the top ten by his teammate. Hopes were high entering the first of two motos. Krestinov used all of the power within his CRF450R to complete the first lap in fifth in that moto and, following a couple of heated battles, secured the result at the chequered flag. This marked the first time that he has finished inside of the top five in a Maxxis British Championship race this season.

Gert Krestinov was just as impressive in the last premier-class encounter, despite the fact that he started the heat outside of the top ten and faced a mountainous task. It did not take long for him to start making progress; he kept picking off established stars and eventually reached the chequered flag in sixth. It was a strong ride and one that left him in fifth overall on the day. The thirty-one points that were acquired helped him jump up to eighth in the championship standings and inch closer to the rider in seventh. There is a lot on the line with two rounds remaining.

Carlton Husband enjoyed a memorable day as well. A brace of ninths was acquired in the two motos and, unsurprisingly, left him in ninth overall on the day. Those results also helped him secure the overall victory in the Expert division, a new championship that he currently leads by four measly points, so there were plenty of positives that could be extracted from the event. Husband will hope to hold onto that series lead when the Maxxis British Championship resumes at Foxhill towards the end of September.

Gert Krestinov: "Fifth overall at the sixth round of the Maxxis British Championship at Hawkstone Park. The day started out well with a good qualifying lap, then in the first race I had a pretty good start. I worked my way to fourth, then suffered from some bad riding in the middle of the moto and gave up some places, but finished fifth. In the second race I had a bad start and worked my way through to sixth for fifth overall. I think it was a decent day."

Carlton Husband: "Sweet day at the Maxxis British Championship. Ninth overall in the MX1 class and first in the Expert class. Gutted that we lost the back brake in the last four laps in the last race, but happy to be back up there and fighting for positions. Big thanks to the team and everyone who helps."
