The Injured: MXGP of Portugal

A collection of MXGP updates.

Published

on

When this feature was put together at the first Grand Prix of the season, it was fairly small and almost irrelevant. The list has grown significantly in recent weeks, however, hence why it has become a useful tool to find out who is currently out of action.

In for the MXGP of Portugal

Shaun Simpson: Shaun Simpson had a scare at the previous Grand Prix in Italy, as a crash on the final lap of the second moto left him searching for medical attention. An additional scan on his shoulder earlier this week revealed that there was no major damage, however, so he will be ready to race this weekend.

Bas Vaessen: Bas Vaessen had a spectacular crash in the second moto at the Grand Prix of Trentino and later posted a photo of his bruised body. Although the luckless Dutchman was sore, he will be fine this weekend and the sole representative under the 114 Motorsports awning.

Out of the MXGP of Portugal

Max Anstie: After hitting his head in Spain, Max Anstie returned to racing at round four and immediately realised that something was not quite right. After seeking further medical attention, along with advice from his team, he was instructed to take two weeks of rest and then return when he is one hundred percent.

Darian Sanayei: Darian Sanayei actually tore his ACL at the first round of the Maxxis British Championship, so he will not be racing this weekend. The Bike It DRT Kawasaki rider will, however, be back on track very soon, as he is going to strive to push on with the injury.

Hunter Lawrence: Hunter Lawrence was battling a virus at the first two rounds of the FIM Motocross World Championship, then suffered more poor luck at the fourth round. A crash in time practice left him with a broken metacarpal in his hand. The injury will force him onto the sidelines this weekend, therefore dashing his title hopes, but he hopes to make it back for the Grand Prix of Russia.

Jordi Tixier: Jordi Tixier initially labelled the Grand Prix of Trentino as the event that he would like to return at, but that was not realistic. Tixier raced at an international in France a little over a week ago and recorded some solid results, such as a fourth place, but was clearly not on top form as the premier class featured just one MXGP regular.

Tommy Searle: Tommy Searle ran into the back of Evgeny Bobryshev at the Grand Prix of Europe and consequently broke his collarbone. Searle is going to start riding again next week, it seems, and then return at the second round of the Maxxis British Championship at Canada Heights. It remains to be seen if he will be able to race in Russia or not.

Milko Potisek: Milko Potisek tangled with another rider on the face of a jump at the MXGP of Europe and, as a result, fractured his ankle in two places. There is currently no timeline on his recovery, but that will undoubtedly sideline him for a month or two at the very least. Another one bites the dust!

Arnaud Tonus: Arnaud Tonus has had a difficult couple of months, with a handful of knocks and injuries. The latest, a dislocated shoulder that was sustained at LaCapelle Marival, was the most devastating, as it required surgery and will rule him of the first portion of the current campaign. There is still no timeline on his recovery, but it is probably going to be a while.

Yamaha Racing

Brian Bogers: Brian Bogers shattered his foot whilst testing a CRF250R in November and has been riding for more than three weeks now. It is likely that he will return at the Grand Prix of Russia, but one would presume that he will back at the Latvian event at the latest. It has been a long road for the Dutchman.

Brian Hsu: Brian Hsu dislocated his shoulder whilst training in Italy before the Grand Prix of Europe. The shoulder was put back into place immediately and it was stated that he would not be out for too long. There has been no statement regarding his recovery, a timeline on his return or anything else though. Hsu has been contacted for a comment.

Valentin Guillod: Valentin Guillod needed to make a splash this season, in order to remind pundits just how capable he is aboard the bigger bike, but his hopes of doing that have been dashed by a pre-season injury. Guillod broke his leg in Spain and will miss a majority of the season.

Anton Gole: One could argue that Anton Gole was a breakthrough star a year ago, hence why he landed a deal with the JK Racing Yamaha outfit. Gole will not be present at the first couple of rounds, however, as he sustained a broken scaphoid during the winter months. Those specific injuries can be quite time consuming and there is no timeline on his return.

Once again, our resident stats guru, Paul Pearcy, provides a breakdown of the MX2 class going into Intu Xanadu. Famed more for its access to a shopping mall and McDonald’s than actual passing, the MX2 contenders will be looking to make their mark. Last year, Simon Laengenfelder reigned supreme and was unstoppable on Sunday, with no rider able to match his pace. If you were a betting man, who would be your winner?
