Jeffrey Herlings claimed the win in the opening moto of the MXGP of China. Maxime Renaux had the strongest start, holding the lead until lap 15, when Herlings made his move to take over the front. With two laps remaining, Tim Gajser also managed to pass the Frenchman, leaving Renaux to finish third ahead of his compatriot and current championship leader Romain Febvre.
Febvre strengthened his position in the title chase, as his main rival Lucas Coenen could do no better than ninth.
In the challenging Chinese heat, Glenn Coldenhoff delivered a strong ride, working his way up to seventh. Calvin Vlaanderen crossed the line in tenth, while Brian Bogers secured fourteenth.
