CALVIN VLAANDEREN: “I WANT TO COMPETE AT THE FRONT IN EVERY RACE”

This weekend, it’s finally happening: the start of the MXGP World Championship in Argentina. The Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP Team is fielding the same three riders as last year: Maxime Renaux (24), Jago Geerts (24) and Calvin Vlaanderen (28). The trio has overcome the injuries of 2024 and is hungry for success.

Just like last year, the season kicks off in Argentina. However, the stunning location of Villa la Angostura – nestled between lakes and mountains – has been replaced by a brand-new track in Córdoba, Argentina’s second-largest city. But before the gate drops, we have some questions for our riders. First up: Calvin Vlaanderen.

You seemed on track for a top-five finish in the 2024 World Championship but then suffered a knee injury. How is your knee now?
Vlaanderen:
“At first, we thought it wasn’t too bad, just a meniscus issue. But it turned out to be much worse. I had to undergo two surgeries. Fortunately, the recovery went really well. My knee is fine now. By January, I was already back on the bike.”

So, you’re starting this World Championship in top shape?
Vlaanderen:
“I’m not yet 100% back to my old self, but I’m getting close. My fitness is definitely better than at this time last season when I was struggling with my shoulder. From January onwards, I’ve been able to train properly. I’ve spent a lot of hours on the bike. I feel great and am really looking forward to the first GP.”

You’ve competed in two preseason races. What did you learn from them?
Vlaanderen: “
I was supposed to race three times, but last weekend’s race in Sommières was literally and figuratively washed out. Luckily, I already had two races under my belt. It was perfect for getting some race rhythm and getting to know the bike better. I’m happy with where I am now, though I know I can still be faster and better.”

What are your goals for this World Championship campaign?
Vlaanderen:
“I want to fight at the front in every GP and aim for the podium. I managed that twice in 2024 (in the two Grand Prix in Indonesia), but I want more. Maybe even grab another win. If I can get good starts, that’s definitely possible.”

The World Championship starts on a brand-new track. Exciting?
Vlaanderen
: “I’ve only seen some photos. The track looks good. It’s a new circuit for everyone, which I like. I’m someone who can read a new track quickly, so that should be an advantage. It’s also supposed to have a sandy surface, which is great, I love that.”

Fast forward to the end of September. Calvin Vlaanderen will be satisfied if…
Vlaanderen:
“… I’ve stayed healthy all year, finished in the top 10 at every GP and ended the World Championship in the top five.”
