The two 125cc riders of the De Baets MX team, Tyla van de Poel and Bertram Thorius, lined up for the second round of the Italian Championship in Montevarchi on Sunday. Both riders showed good speed, and on the challenging track, Thorius came close to securing a top-ten finish.
Leading up to the event, heavy rain had fallen in Italy, but the organizers worked hard to make the track rideable. Apart from a few wet and muddy sections, they succeeded in their efforts. In qualifying, Tyla van de Poel was still searching for the right feeling on the track but managed to set the fifteenth fastest time. Bertram clocked the 22nd fastest time and was motivated heading into the first moto.
At the start of the first moto, Bertram got away well and began the race in fifth place. He rode a strong race and, despite losing a few positions throughout, finished in an impressive eleventh place. Tyla, however, was unlucky as his starting gate did not drop properly, leaving him at a disadvantage. He quickly made up several positions in the early laps, but as the race progressed, he struggled with arm pump. He managed to finish the race in a solid nineteenth place.
In the second moto, Tyla had a much better start and entered the first corner around tenth place. He was riding well, but after two laps, he suffered a rear brake failure, forcing him to retire from the race. Bertram started around fifteenth place and steadily worked his way up to twelfth, closing in on a group battling for ninth. Unfortunately, he collided with another rider and crashed, dropping back to nineteenth. However, he fought hard in the remaining laps to recover to sixteenth place.
In the overall classification, Bertram finished fourteenth, while Tyla had to settle for 24th due to his second-moto misfortune. Next Sunday, Tyla will compete in the Dutch MX Season Opener in Lierop.
