Daniel Sanders, after his victory in the prologue, also managed to win the first stage of the Dakar Rally. In the nearly four-hour-long special stage, Sanders was able to build a lead of just over two minutes over American Ricky Brabec. Ross Branch followed closely behind, finishing third ahead of Tosha Schareina and Luciano Benavides.
