Youthstream's MXGP Mag tends to reveal some interesting nuggets of information and the latest edition is no different. In his opening statement, Giuseppe Luongo mentioned that one of the discussions that took place at the organisers meetings in Monaco focussed on expanding the Grand Prix calendar so that it would run until the end of October and pushing the Motocross of Nations up towards the beginning of September. The quote from Luongo is below.
"Another issue discussed at this meeting was the expansion of the MXGP calendar, to bring through the end of October like the other motorsports (MotoGP goes through until the middle of November and F1 until beginning of December). This would permit more space between the Grand Prix events giving more time to the riders to recover before the next event, it would also optimise the travel for everyone and last but not least MXGP would be present in the media for one month more.
"If this can be reached there is an option of bringing the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations earlier to possibly the first weekend of September, guaranteeing better weather conditions for all. There are many ideas and options, now these will be discussed with all the partners and all together we will take the best decision."
This obviously would not be put into place for the 2020 FIM Motocross World Championship as it is far too late, but what do you think about the concept moving forward? One would presume that the final Grands Prix of the series – if run in October – would have to be flyaways in places like Australia or the Middle East. Would having the MXoN before the end of the year be an issue too? There is a lot to unpack here.
