MX Vice contributor Lorenzo Resta is present in Shanghai – for the last round of the 2019 FIM Motocross World Championship – and caught up with the qualifying-heat winners at the end of day one at the Grand Prix of China. What did Glenn Coldenhoff and Jorge Prado think of their respective performances, the layout of the circuit and conditions? That information can be found in this interview from the track.

MX Vice: The winners of the qualifying races, Glenn Coldenhoff and Jorge Prado. What did you think of the track? Was it like you expected? How about your day?

#259: Yeah, it was difficult to expect anything. We did not know. We did not see any pictures. They said it was going to be sandy and it is definitely quite soft. I would not say it is real deep sand. They prepped it this morning and ripped it really deep – they also put a lot of water on. It was quite tough to jump all the jumps. Now it dried out a bit and it is still soft. It is quite sketchy. You need to be really focussed and there are a lot of lines. I would say that there is mainly one good line. I quite enjoy it here. A few jumps are even difficult now – I did not do all of them. It is a good experience so far.

#61: The track layout is not too bad. We only have one good line, but I think this comes because they put way too much water. For MX2 it was way too much. They ripped way too much in places – the preparation this weekend was not the best for us. We all need to ride the same line, because it is either too deep or too wet. The track was getting a bit better after a few laps. Hopefully tomorrow will be a bit better and after riding today it can get a bit harder in places. I am enjoying it. It is not too hot and it’s nice to have a new track on the calendar.

#259: You say not too hot?

#61: The temperature is not too hot. Maybe it is a little bit humid, but I do not have the feeling like in Palembang.

#259: I think we were lucky that it was kind of cloudy, you know. If the sun was fully out…

#61: For the time practice it was a bit warmer. When we got out for the motos, it was not warm. It was good.

#259: Yeah, the motos were good.

What do you expect for tomorrow, Glenn?

#259: I hope to do good! Like you know, I want that third place really bad. I am in good form at the moment, but I also know that anything can happen. I will just do my best. I do not have pressure and just want to win. I have won two GPs this year and I feel like I can do that again here. Jeffrey will have some extra tomorrow, for sure, and I do not know where Gajser finished…

Eleventh, I think. He had two crashes.

#259: For Gajser it is going to be difficult to have a good start. He was really fast today and you never know. All of the guys are quite similar speed, but it is difficult to pass. A good start is quite important.

Jorge?

#61: Hopefully we can finish the season with a win. Tomorrow is my last race on a 250F, so hopefully we can finish the championship in the best way possible and on the top.

Once again, our resident stats guru, Paul Pearcy, provides a breakdown of the MX2 class going into Intu Xanadu. Famed more for its access to a shopping mall and McDonald’s than actual passing, the MX2 contenders will be looking to make their mark. Last year, Simon Laengenfelder reigned supreme and was unstoppable on Sunday, with no rider able to match his pace. If you were a betting man, who would be your winner?
