Race Report – Wilson rules Wembley

Dean Wilson took control of the Arenacross ACU British championship at the weekend in Wembley’s iconic OVO Arena with a dominant display in front of a packed-out London crowd.

After winning both of his qualifying races, he then made it a three-peat of race wins on the night on his Armor Vision / St.Blazey Honda to extend his lead in the official ACU Arenacross British championship after his debut win in Birmingham. Wilson didn’t have it easy though, after a top five start he had to work hard to get to the front and then when he made it there, he was pushed all the way by Crendon Tru 7 Honda Racing’s Conrad Mewse.

Mewse, who was making his debut for the 2025 championship after missing round one with a shoulder injury, was impressive. After also winning both of his qualifying heats, the anticipation for the final and a battle between Wilson and Mewse built, and it didn’t disappoint. After Dean worked his way to the front Conrad stepped it up and did all he can to stay in Wilson’s wake and within striking distance to try and make a move to take the win but ‘Deano’ just had the upper hand with incredible whoop speed and by quadding the tail end of the rhythm section.

Tommy Searle rounded off the podium positions on his Dirt Store Triumph Racing 250. Searle is the only rider in the pro ranks racing a 250cc machine, but it certainly didn’t hold him back off the start as he pulled yet another holeshot against the 450’s. After the disappointment of crashing out of the final at the opening round in Birmingham, Tommy was much happier this time around to make the podium, although he couldn’t hold on to the pace of Wilson and Mewse ahead of him and spent much of the race fending off an impressive Taylor Hammal on his Dixon Racing Kawasaki. In only his second pro Arenacross race, Hammal showed he’s a fast learner looking like he’s been racing indoors for years. Matt Bayliss looked good all day on his SC Sportshome Husqvarna and that reflected in his fifth-place finish.

As always with Arenacross, it’s not just the pro racers who provide incredible race action for the fans and Wembley was no exception. In the highly competitive Amateur class, it was Louis Brookes who took his first win in his debut season to take the red plate from Raife Broadley who ended the night second overall and in the championship. Sion Talbot improved his performance from Birmingham, leading the early laps and bringing it home in third.

The racing in the youth classes was again a brilliant watch. In the Futures 125cc class it was Austin Beasty who thoroughly deserved his first win, going 1-2 for the overall. Former Supermini champion, Isaac Ash made up for a crash in his first moto to win the second but although it wasn’t enough for the overall, he now leads the championship. Lewis Spratt visited the podium for the first time this year with a 2-3 for third overall.

In the Supermini class John Slade got it done in front of his home crowd and in doing so became the first ‘small wheeled’ rider to win a race. John’s 2-1 was enough to give him the overall over George Cherry on the tie breaker ruling with George going 1-2, but he still holds the championship lead. Oliver Williams took his first podium of the tour coming in third.

It was another overall win in the AX Mini class for Mason Staddon as he extended his championship lead. This time tying on points with Cameron Berry, who put on a solid performance as he works himself back to fitness after picking up a shoulder injury coming into the championship. The always entertaining Frank Bishop went 3-3 to make his first visit to the podium.

The Arenacross ACU British championship now takes a weekend off and the battle will commence in Belfast for a double header, with rounds three and four at the SSE Arena on Friday 31st January and Saturday 1st February.
