MXGP World Championship
Pinpoint: Romain Febvre
Romain Febvre makes progress.
The 2017 FIM Motocross World Championship has certainly given Romain Febvre a lot to think about. Machine and health issues haunted him at points and, consequently, his ranking in the premier division suffered. Febvre featured in the top twenty in thirty-five of the thirty-seven motos that were run, but could only muster up enough points for sixth.
Although you may be wondering how a former champion, who has not moved to a new awning, could struggle so much with bike issues, the writing was on the wall at this point a year ago. When he returned from his concussion towards the end of last year, he was attempting to find a sweet spot with his bike set-up. Whenever he would improve his YZ450F on track, however, he would suffer on the start and vice versa. That was still a major issue when he got to Qatar in February.
The fact that he then crashed at a pre-season event in Italy and suffered what most thought was a concussion obviously set him back somewhat, as most teams used that period to make some final adjustments that would complete the package. Febvre recently confirmed, however, that a concussion was not sustained at that event, so should not be considered when discussing his recent health issues. “Pre-season was not like a knockout,” he told us exclusively. “My neck was really bruised. I did not have a concussion.”
That conversation was sparked when the topic of concussions arose. Romain Febvre has taken some hard hits across the last eighteen months and those have been well-documented, hence why some have now voiced their concern. The incident that occurred at Matterley Basin in June last year was undoubtedly the scariest, as he was out for a considerable period and was then forced to miss the following event to ensure that no further damage was sustained. That was arguably what begun this downward spiral, in which he has won just a single moto, as everything appeared to be clicking in the months prior to that.
“I had Matterley and then a few weeks ago [at the Monster Energy MXGP of USA in Jacksonville],” he continued on the subject of concussions. “Two and one each year, so if it was more than that it is worse. One each year is not so, so bad. For sure we need to stop that, as it would be better for me later [on in life]. I think that one a year is not crazy or something. I hope to not do it anymore,” he said. This in itself has sparked debate, as those in attendance at WW Motocross Park earlier this month have remarked that the crash that Febvre had was frightening to witness.
Now, was that really “just a little concussion” like he said? There is no way to know, of course, but the fact that he returned with such authority in the sand of Assen should act as proof that it was not as significant as the one that he had a year ago. The fact that he has hit his head so much is cause for concern though, but many guys have experienced more concussions in a shorter space of time and not suffered. The focus is firmly on the future, rather than what has gone on during a season that he has labelled as “not great.”
The fact that he has returned to form somewhat at the last four events is undoubtedly encouraging, but does it really mean much? Febvre has ditched his current model for the 2018 YZ450F this week and, if that testing goes well, he’ll be aboard the machine at the Motocross of Nations. Could this all-new machine open up another can of worms though, as the issues that he just overcame may arise again? “We’ll see,” he commented exclusively. “Everything is new, but mainly the engine. The frame is new also, but we are sure that it is not going to change or [make us] go backwards. On the engine we need to find some solutions.”
With so many questions being asked, it is understandable that some doubt whether he’ll be able to do enough to help Team France claim a fourth-consecutive victory at the Motocross of Nations. Febvre was dealing with similar issues last year though, as mentioned above, but still came out swinging at the prestigious event and kept his impressive record intact, so he has won three of the four motos that he has completed at the event. Would you bet against someone who has experienced success like that?

Once again, our resident stats guru, Paul Pearcy, provides a breakdown of the MX2 class going into Intu Xanadu. Famed more for its access to a shopping mall and McDonald’s than actual passing, the MX2 contenders will be looking to make their mark. Last year, Simon Laengenfelder reigned supreme and was unstoppable on Sunday, with no rider able to match his pace. If you were a betting man, who would be your winner?
