EMX Report: MXGP of France

A report with results.

Published

on

Support classes are typically uninteresting, to be brutally honest. That is certainly not the case at a round of the FIM Motocross World Championship, however, as the various EMX classes feature countless riding stars. The EMX250 and EMX125 series will continue this weekend, alongside the WMX class, so we’ll use this report to ensure that you are up to date.

EMX125 Time Practice.

It has been three weeks since the EMX125 riders last tackled a round of the FIM Motocross World Championship, but it seems that not much has changed in that time. Brian Strubhart Moreau (1:58.219) and Mikkel Haarup (2:01.034) set the fastest times in their respective sessions earlier today, so have left no doubt that they are the main protagonists. Although the latter, Harrup, had the slowest time of the pair, he was arguably the most impressive. ‘722’ was almost two full seconds quicker than anyone else in his session!

The top fifteen from each session transferred directly to the motos, so everyone who is expected to qualifying has managed to do so. A tip of the hat to Christopher Mills, by the way, for setting the eighth-fastest time in the second session. If you need a reminder of what the situation in this class is, Strubhart-Moreau leads the standings by eighteen points over Haarup and was the winner of the previous round.

EMX125 Group One Qualifying Results: 1st Brian Strubhart-Moreau (1:58.219), 2nd Scotty Verhaeghe (1:58.407), 3rd Kevin Horgmo (2:00.013), 4th Gianluca Facchetti (2:01.870), 5th Isak Gifting (2:02.633), 6th Andrea Zanotti (2:03.037), 7th Maxime Charlier (2:03.795), 8th Rene Hofer (2:04.104), 9th Tom Guyon (2:04.357), 10th Julien Duhamel (2:04.378).

EMX125 Group Two Qualifying Results: 1st Mikkel Haarup (2:01.034), 2nd Thibault Benistant (2:03.025), 3rd Calvin Fonvieille (2:03.605), 4th Jeremy Sydow (2:03.821), 5th Sergi Notario (2:04.258), 6th Paolo Lugana (2:04.642), 7th Xylian Ramella (2:05.440), 8th Christopher Mills (2:05.904), 9th Emil Weckman (2:06.116), 10th Raivo Dankers (2:06.360).

WMX Time Practice.

Whilst the WMX riders are on track, all eyes are on Livia Lancelot. ‘114’ was not the quickest in time practice, however, despite the fact that she did more laps than anyone else! Kiara Fontanesi built on her momentum from the Grand Prix of Trentino to claim pole position by six tenths. The fact that Courtney Duncan was more than five seconds off the pace was undoubtedly the most surprising point to emerge from the session.

WMX Time Practice Results: 1st Kiara Fontanesi (2:10.827), 2nd Livia Lancelot (2:11.492), 3rd Nancy Van De Ven (2:14.560), 4th Courtney Duncan (2:16.151), 5th Larissa Papenmeier (2:17.724), 6th Stephanie Laier (2:17.759), 7th Emma Milesevic (2:21.249), 8th Justine Charroux (2:21.356), 9th Amandine Verstappen (2:21.629), 10th Nicky van Wordragen (2:22.340).

EMX250 Time Practice.

An abundance of noteworthy points emerged from the first of two EMX250 sessions. Mathys Boisrame, who is not expected to contend each week, set the fastest time by a considerable margin. Most were curious whether Lesiardo would still be a contender, following his switch to Japanese machinery, but those doubts have been squashed now, as he recorded the third-fastest time. Michael Eccles (eleventh), Mel Pocock (twelfth) and Josiah Natzke (fourteenth) all crept into the motos directly from the timed session.

Ruben Fernandez unearthed some raw speed in the second timed session, as he recorded a time that was more than a second quicker than anyone else. That was not the biggest story, however, as Miro Sihvonen and Tristan Charboneau failed to qualify directly. The former crashed hard on the finish line and did less laps than anyone else, hence why he failed to make the cut.

EMX250 Group One Qualifying Results: 1st Mathys Boisrame (1:57.390), 2nd Anthony Bourdon (1:58.112), 3rd Morgan Lesiardo (1:58.257), 4th Mathys Boisrame (1:58.381), 5th Simone Furlotti (1:58.415), 6th Jago Geerts (1:58.545), 7th Todd Kellett (1:59.329), 8th Nick Kouwenberg (1:59.740), 9th Mike Stender (1:59.799), 10th Nicholas Lapucci (2:00.019).

EMX250 Group Two Qualifying Results: 1st Ruben Fernandez (1:55.342), 2nd Jed Beaton (1:56.693), 3rd Adrien Malaval (1:56.718), 4th Pierre Goupillon (1:57.689), 5th Marshal Weltin (1:58.801), 6th Alberto Forato (1:59.059), 7th Tom Vialle (1:59.282), 8th Dylan Walsh (1:59.336), 9th Ken Bengtson (2:00.305), 10th Roni Kytonen (2:00.638).

WMX Moto One

The French fans were left deflated at the start of the first WMX moto, as Livia Lancelot was on the cusp of the top ten and had a considerable amount of work to do. Lancelot made consistent passes, however, then eventually pulled up behind Kiara Fontanesi and Nancy Van De Ven. Her life was made easier when the former crashed before climbing the biggest hill with two laps to go, but Van De Ven still stood in the way of a moto victory.

Lancelot made a move on the final lap – much to the delight of the thousands of fans – and claimed her second moto win of the season. ‘114’ also moved to within three points of Kiara Fontanesi in the series standings. What happened to Courtney Duncan? The New Zealander crashed and has reportedly gone for further examinations on her back.

WMX Moto One Results: 1st Livia Lancelot, 2nd Nancy Van De Ven, 3rd Larissa Papenmeier, 4th Kiara Fontanesi, 5th Stephanie Laier, 6th Nicky van Wordragen, 7th Francesca Nocera, 8th Sara Andersen, 9th Justine Charroux, 10th Amandine Verstappen.

EMX125 Moto One

Although Kevin Horgmo took the early lead in the first of two EMX125 motos, his chances of taking the win evaporated quite quickly. After just four laps he had dropped to fourth and then made no real progress for a handful of laps. ‘24’ started to pick it up with five laps to go – a fact that his lap times support – and was back in the lead just four laps later! The win catapulted him to second in the standings too after Mikkel Haarup – the former series leader – had to push forward to fourteenth from dead last.

EMX125 Moto One Results: 1st Kevin Horgmo, 2nd Scotty Verhaeghe, 3rd Gianluca Facchetti, 4th Maxime Charlier, 5th Brian Strubhart-Moreau, 6th Andrea Zanotti, 7th Tom Guyon, 8th Isak Gifting, 9th Paolo Lugana, 10th Jeremy Sydow.

EMX250 Moto One

The first EMX250 encounter was all about Mathys Boisrame. Pierre Goupillon actually took the holeshot, but gave way almost immediately. Nothing changed in the race for the lead after that – to the delight of the French fans – but Jago Geerts got the gap down to three seconds after advancing from fifth on lap one. Todd Kellett stood out also, as he finally broke into the top five after starting on the cusp of the top ten.

What happened to Tristan Charboneau? It looked like he had issues with his vision on lap one, so he pulled into pit lane and then re-entered the race. Twenty-seventh was the best position that he could manage after overcoming that adversity. Mel Pocock was also outside of the points, as he withdrew with an unidentified issue on lap six.

EMX250 Moto One Results: 1st Mathys Boisrame, 2nd Jago Geerts, 3rd Pierre Goupillon, 4th Todd Kellett, 5th Morgan Lesiardo, 6th Adrien Malaval, 7th Mike Stender, 8th Ken Bengtson, 9th Marshal Weltin, 10th Jed Beaton.

WMX Moto Two

Much like the first encounter, the final WMX moto kept fans on the edge of their seats. Courtney Duncan returned to steal the early lead from Livia Lancelot and then controlled the entire race. Lancelot was right there, however, and crossed the finish line just three seconds down at the end. That was more than enough to take the overall at her home Grand Prix. Although Lancelot kept it close, it seems Duncan had a lot more in the tank. The fastest lap that the latter posted was almost a full second quicker than Lancelot!

WMX Moto Two Results: 1st Courtney Duncan, 2nd Livia Lancelot, 3rd Kiara Fontanesi, 4th Nancy Van De Ven, 5th Larissa Papenmeier, 6th Sara Andersen, 7th Amandine Verstappen, 8th Nicky van Wordragen, 9th Stephanie Laier, 10th Jessie Joineau.

WMX Overall Results: 1st Livia Lancelot (1-2), 2nd Nancy Van De Ven (2-4), 3rd Kiara Fontanesi (4-3), 4th Larissa Papenmeier (3-5), 5th Sara Andersen (8-6), 6th Nicky van Wordragen (6-8), 7th Stephanie Laier (5-9), 8th Courtney Duncan (39-1), 9th Amandine Verstappen (10-7), 10th Justine Charroux (9-13).

WMX Series Standings: 1st Kiara Fontanesi (115), 2nd Livia Lancelot (114), 3rd Courtney Duncan (108), 4th Nancy Van De Ven (103), 5th Larissa Papenmeier (99). 6th Nicky van Wordragen (87), 7th Amandine Verstappen (81), 8th Shana van der Vlist (63), 9th Francesca Nocera (61), 10th Virginie Germond (54).

EMX125 Moto Two

There were multiple leaders in the second EMX125 moto, but Gianluca Facchetti eventually prevailed. ‘22’ started fourth, worked his way into the lead on lap five and then generated an advantage of six seconds by the chequered flag. Kevin Horgmo had a similar race to yesterday, but the outcome was not quite as brilliant. Horgmo led initially, dropped to fifth and then clawed his way back to second at the finish. Raivo Dankers also led momentarily before making a mistake.

EMX125 Moto Two Results: 1st Gianluca Facchetti, 2nd Kevin Horgmo, 3rd Brian Strubhart-Moreau, 4th Calvin Fonvieille, 5th Mikkel Haarup, 6th Tom Guyon, 7th Jeremy Sydow, 8th Rene Hofer, 9th Raivo Dankers, 10th Andrea Zanotti.

EMX125 Overall Results: 1st Kevin Horgmo (1-2), 2nd Gianluca Facchetti (3-1), 3rd Brian Strubhart-Moreau (5-3), 4th Tom Guyon (7-6), 5th Andrea Zanotti (6-10), 6th Jeremy Sydow (10-7), 7th Mikkel Haarup (14-5), 8th Scotty Verhaeghe (2-38), 9th Paolo Lugana (9-13), 10th Rene Hofer (15-8).

EMX125 Series Standings: 1st Brian Strubhart-Moreau (128), 2nd Kevin Horgmo (118), 3rd Gianluca Facchetti (100), 4th Mikkel Haarup (97), 5th Sergi Notario (78), 6th Rene Hofer (63) 7th Paolo Lugana (60), 8th Jeremy Sydow (53), 9th Alessandro Manucci (51), 10th Tim Edberg (49).

EMX250 Moto Two

Mathys Boisrame shot out to the early lead in the final EMX250 encounter, but had Jago Geerts hot on his heels from the start. Not much changed between the pair; Geerts lurked behind the race-one winner but just could not get close enough to execute a pass. Alberto Forato, meanwhile, was charging forward from eighth on lap one and passed them both on the final lap to take the win. Forato finished a lowly twelfth in moto one, but still managed to climb up onto the overall podium in third.

What happened to Todd Kellett? ‘98’ crashed in turn one and was down for quite some time, but got up and charged all the way back to thirteenth. Morgan Lesiardo – the current series leader and new Monster Energy KRT signing – battled forward from an awful start to salvage some points.

EMX250 Moto Two Results: 1st Alberto Forato, 2nd Mathys Boisrame, 3rd Jago Geerts, 4th Simone Furlotti, 5th Ruben Fernandez, 6th Josiah Natzke, 7th Mel Pocock, 8th Mike Stender, 9th Morgan Lesiardo, 10th Pierre Goupillon.

EMX250 Overall Classification: 1st Mathys Boisrame (1-2), 2nd Jago Geerts (2-3), 3rd Alberto Forato (12-1), 4th Pierre Goupillon (3-10), 5th Morgan Lesiardo (5-9), 6th Mike Stender (7-8), 7th Todd Kellett (4-13), 8th Josiah Natzke (13-6), 9th Ken Bengtson (8-12), 10th Adrien Malaval (6-14).

EMX250 Series Standings: 1st Morgan Lesiardo (140), 2nd Jago Geerts (106), 3rd Simone Furlotti (104), 4th Alberto Forato (97), 5th Ruben Fernandez (94), 6th Ken Bengtson (91), 7th Miro Sihvonen (90), 8th Josiah Natzke (75), 9th Nick Kouwenberg (73), 10th Todd Kellett (70).

Once again, our resident stats guru, Paul Pearcy, provides a breakdown of the MX2 class going into Intu Xanadu. Famed more for its access to a shopping mall and McDonald’s than actual passing, the MX2 contenders will be looking to make their mark. Last year, Simon Laengenfelder reigned supreme and was unstoppable on Sunday, with no rider able to match his pace. If you were a betting man, who would be your winner?
